This appointment offers an exciting opportunity to join the Department of History in the School of History and Cultures at Birmingham. The Department is one of the largest and most diverse in Britain and has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching. In REF 2014 History was ranked first nationally, with exceptionally high-calibre research publications as well as strong impact beyond the academy.

We seek a specialist to consolidate and expand our teaching strengths in the field of Medieval History. At undergraduate level the appointee will be expected to contribute teaching to optional second and third year undergraduate modules including Radical Pieties: Militants, Martyrs and Mystics in Medieval Christianity and Islam and 1066, 1099: Chronicling Conquest on the Frontiers of Medieval Europe. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the team-taught first year core modules Discovering the Middle Ages and Living in the Middle Ages, the group research project The First Crusade as Seen by Contemporaries, and the medieval history strand of the second year Research Methods modules, as well as to supervise undergraduate and MA dissertations on medieval topics. There will also be opportunities to contribute to the MA Medieval Studies core modules and the Medieval History pathway on the History Distance Learning programme.

The successful candidate will also be expected to participate fully in the administration of teaching by, for example, convening an undergraduate module.

The colleague appointed to the role will be able to demonstrate the proven ability to:
  • Teach and examine courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Use appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in their field
  • Plan and review own teaching approaches.
  • Undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining (including a broad range of summative and formative assessments)
  • Disseminate appropriate practices through suitable media
  • Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work
  • Advise on personal development of colleagues and students
  • Contribute to the administration/management of teaching across the Department/School
  • It is desirable that the successful candidate also has the ability to:
  • Convene modules and/or programmes in their field
  • Initiate and participate in multi-/inter-disciplinary activities with colleagues in History, the School of History and Cultures, and other areas of the University.

  • Higher degree relevant to research and teaching area or equivalent qualifications, or close to completion
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to design and deliver teaching materials successfully.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of, and ability to contribute to, broader management/administration processes.


Job Description

Background

To teach and advise undergraduate, postgraduate or CPD students within their own subject area and within an established teaching programme, managed supervised by a member of staff with ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the teaching programme.

Summary of Role
  • Teaching within own subject area within an established teaching programme (under the supervision from an academic member of staff)
  • Contribute to generating funding and may: a) contribute to the enhancement of the student experience or employability; b) contribute to designing CPD programmes for clients external to the University and similar; c) contribute to delivering CPD programmes, consulting on own specialism and the like, often under the supervision of a project leader.
  • Contribute to licensing or spin-out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar.


Main Duties / Responsibilities
  • Teach courses at a range of levels within the specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates, postgraduates and CPD students, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, so that the School's teaching objectives are met
  • Contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues.
  • Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work.
  • Develop an approach to planning and reviewing own teaching.
  • Undertake a full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining. (Summative assessment, including assessed work contributing to the final award - as a mark or as a credit - such as unseen examinations, essays, dissertations or presentations, is subject to validation by the academic supervisor.)
  • Frequently update own subject expertise.
  • Undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes.
  • Undertake management/administration arising from teaching.
  • Contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
