Research Fellow in Hydrodynamics & Software Engineering

Employer
University of Southampton
Location
Southampton, United Kingdom
Salary
£30,942 to £38,017
Closing date
Jul 18, 2021
Are you experienced with hydrodynamical simulations of astrophysical objects? Do you want to bridge the gap to observations and test these models? Would you like to develop software engineering skills as part of an exciting new instrument development? Then this opportunity could be interesting for you.

The Astrogroup of the University of Southampton's School of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow in the field of hydrodynamical simulations. You will be joining our collaborative team led by Prof Sebastian Hoenig to exploit and expand the group's 3D radiative hydrodynamical model of the dusty environment of single and binary active galactic nuclei (AGN). In addition, you will become part of the GRAVITY+ project and support the science and data reduction development teams to deliver the next generation of ESO VLTI instruments.

The project will help you acquire a diverse range of skills. It is not expected that you are an expert in all aspects of the project to take up the position, but that you come with a solid background in hydrodynamical modelling of any flavour, code development, and the curiosity and ambition to apply your software development skills in new ways. In return, you will become part of established and productive international teams that work on the forefront of infrared observations of AGN and their interpretation. Previous experience with AGN is an asset, but not required.

The Southampton Astrogroup provides a stimulating and collegial environment with many opportunities to collaborate with other group members. Our main research themes are compact objects and time-domain astrophysics. We are strongly committed to diversity in the student and academic population and you will be supported in developing your career while maintaining a good work-life balance through family-friendly policies. Our goal is to serve as a springboard to improve your scientific profile and help you achieve your career goals.

You will need a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in astronomy, astrophysics, or related discipline.

The post is full time, fixed term until 31/03/2024 and is subject to funding restrictions and applications from both junior and more senior candidates are highly welcome. The University offers an attractive benefits package and relocation assistance. Starting dates are quite flexible and the position is available immediately.

Applications should consist of a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a brief statement of research interested (2 pages max). Please upload all documents as one pdf file. Moreover, contact details for two letters of references will need to be provided on application, but letter requests will only be sent out for shortlisted candidates.

Informal enquiries are particularly welcome. Please contact Prof Sebastian Hoenig, s.hoenig@soton.ac.uk (Twitter: @SebHoenig)

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
