Provide therapeutic counselling, assessment, risk assessment, crisis intervention and case management support to students studying at the University of Adelaide.

The Division of Academic and Student Engagement drives the achievement of the University's strategic goals in relation to learning and teaching. This includes ensuring that students have a quality experience and investing in the ongoing professional development of academic staff. Counselling Support is part of the broader Student Life team which is located within the Division of Academic and Student Engagement and is responsible for supporting the University's strategic objectives through the delivery of efficient and responsive student services and administrative functions.

Working under broad direction of the Manager, Counselling Services, Student Counsellors are a member of a small team who work in collaboration to provide a responsive and effective service to enrolled students at the University of Adelaide. The Counsellor would be expected to thoroughly assess needs and to be able to work with the diverse student client group using a variety of therapeutic models with a focus on short term interventions.

The Counsellor would be required to work collaboratively with a range of University staff to resolve complex issues and to assist in triaging more critical presentations when needed. The Counselling Service also provides immediate assistance to staff and students in crisis.

To be successful you will need:
  • Extensive experience in providing therapeutic counselling, assessment, risk assessment, crisis intervention and case management support. A good working knowledge of brief intervention strategies will be viewed favourably.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the wide range and complex needs of students within a tertiary education setting.
  • Well-developed ability to establish rapport and form a therapeutic alliance with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and liaise, negotiate and resolve conflict in complex situations.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
