Technical Officer (Grade 10.1)

Full-time two-year fixed-term contract appointment

The SU-IRG (Stellenbosch University Immunology Research Group) laboratory within the Department of Biomedical Sciences, is an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory focusing on the immunology and discovery of biomarkers of TB. SU-IRG seeks a detail-oriented, motivated individual to join their team as a Biorepository Coordinator . The incumbent will work closely with the Laboratory and Data Management teams. The incumbent will be appointed to the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics.

Duties:
  • Managing all sample storage for SU-IRG (i.e. fridges and freezers, ULT freezers, LN2, cold room);
  • Upkeep of samples inventories;
  • Storage space allocations for students and upcoming studies;
  • Arranging and preparing outgoing sample shipments (including all accompanying documentation manifests, customs invoices, etc.);
  • Importing and exporting permit application, submissions and tracking;
  • Receiving, quality controlling and allocating storage for incoming sample shipments;
  • Assisting laboratory staff with quality control prior to long-term storage;
  • Retrieval, quality control and transfer of FluidX racks and legacy samples to the BMRI Biorepository for long-term storage in Hamilton BiOS;
  • Registering new studies with BMRI Biorepository and assisting PIs with MOU/SLA process;
  • Invoicing SU-IRG biorepository clients;
  • Sample destruction;
  • Maintaining fridge/freezer inventory and scheduling annual services;
  • Attending to after-hours emergencies in the laboratory (e.g. critical fridge and freezer alarms).


Job requirements:
  • An MSc degree in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related field;
  • A minimum of two years' working experience in an ISO accredited laboratory;
  • Proficiency in LIMS / freezer inventory system and sample storage;
  • Knowledge of ISO 15189 or 17025 guidelines;
  • Own transport to deal with after-hours emergencies is essential;
  • Knowledge of IATA and/or Dangerous Goods regulations.


Recommendation:
  • Previous experience as biorepository coordinator.
