Assistant Instructional Professor in the Humanities General Education (Core) Sequences

The Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for up to three appointments as Assistant Instructional Professor to teach in the Humanities General Education ("Core") sequences. In particular, we are interested in candidates qualified to teach in two sequences: Language and the Human and Reading Cultures . These are a full-time, benefits-eligible, positions with a one-year, non-renewable, term starting 1 September 2021 and ending 31 August 2022. The teaching load will be seven sections in one of the two aforementioned Humanities Core sequences, distributed 3-3-1 (over the Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters). In addition to teaching, Assistant Instructional Professors in the Humanities Core are required to participate in the weekly staff meetings and other events (lectures, performances, etc.) associated with the Core sequence(s) to which they are assigned, and to help organize and run the pedagogical programming connected to the Humanities Core curriculum.

Part of every first-year student's course schedule, the Humanities Core is the foundation of Chicago's general education curriculum. It is instrumental in facilitating the transition from high school to College by helping students become independent thinkers. In small discussion-based seminars, students learn and practice the art of oral argument and dialogue. The Humanities Core teaches students to read closely, think critically, and write effectively. By engaging with texts and artworks of great complexity and enduring significance, students grapple with the philosophical, literary, and aesthetic questions and issues that underpin the humanities. The position requires a PhD or equivalent in a relevant humanistic discipline, substantial teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, and evidence of pedagogical excellence. Experience teaching in a general education or core curriculum is desirable.

Optionally, applicants may upload a teaching portfolio containing samples of pedagogical materials (syllabi, assignments, assessments, etc.), which demonstrate the candidate's approach to teaching and pedagogical expertise, as well as sample student teaching evaluations.
