The DAngelo Lab at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is offering a Research Assistant I/II position in a lab that does fundamental cell biology studying the role of Nuclear Pore Complexes in the immune system, muscle and cancer. The position ranges from 10-20 hours per week to full time. The successful candidate will play an important role in the growth of lab projects by responsibly carrying out assays to effectively manage mouse colonies and performing other tasks to support the lab. This is a great opportunity to further develop a wide array of laboratory skills while gaining scientific knowledge and contributing to cutting-edge research. Primary Responsibilities * Performs mouse colony management * Maintains reagent stocks and performs basic lab maintenance * Assists with DNA, RNA and protein analysis using current molecular biology and biochemistry techniques * Provides interpretation and analysis of results * Assists teams and core staff with all aspects of laboratory projects and experiments using standard laboratory techniques under supervision * Troubleshoots problems and develops solutions to technical problems using independent thinking, literature, and colleagues as resources to solve problems * Operates specialized equipment requiring a moderate degree of skill and able to troubleshoot straightforward problems * Accurately documents and records all experiments in lab notebooks and electronic data system Required Experience * Bachelors degree in a biological science or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained is required * Prior lab experience is a plus * Experience working with laboratory mice including handling mice, genotyping and mouse colony management is preferred * Candidates with one or more years of experience may be considered for Level II * Candidates with a strong commitment to the biological sciences is preferred Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities * Work independently as well as in a team environment * Be responsible and have strong time management skills * Able to analyze and resolve issues of moderate complexity * Possess strong attention to detail and organizational skills * Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills * Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office * Embody the Institutes core values of Commitment, Collaboration, Communication, Community and Compassion The scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute are making research breakthroughs in cancer, neuroscience, immunology, and children's disease.
