Under the general direction of the Department Chair of History, the Hood College Department of History invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of History beginning August 1, 2021. The responsibilities of the assistant professorship are in nineteenth-century American history with a specialization in the role of the United States in global political, cultural, and/or imperial history. Secondary specialization in public history, transnational history, gender history, or environmental history is required. Candidates should be prepared to teach the survey of U.S. history to 1877 and the modern world history survey in addition to courses on the Civil War, the U.S. in the nineteenth-century world, and public history. The ability to teach undergraduate courses on the history of women in America or environmental history is strongly encouraged. The candidate may also be asked to teach graduate courses on historical methodology or American history in the College's interdisciplinary M.A. in Humanities program. In addition to pursuing excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will mentor and advise undergraduate majors and minors in both curricular and professional matters; they may also advise graduate research. Beyond their work with students, the candidate must show initiative in service to the department and the college and must demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship and its classroom applications. With 28 undergraduate majors and 19 master's programs, Hood College is liberal arts institution committed to providing students with solid professional training grounded in the humanities and sciences. Located in Frederick, MD, the College's proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore enables students and faculty to enrich their work in the classroom with a wealth of local research and professional development opportunities. For the History Department, in particular, the area's numerous national and local museums, archives, and historical sites make possible a wide array of on-site learning and internship experiences. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Teaching, Scholarship, and Service * Teaching load: 4/3 course load per academic year to include courses serving the undergraduate core curriculum, the history major and minor, and the M.A. in Humanities curriculum. * Mentor students through academic advising, internship placement and advising, and faculty-student research collaboration. * Contribute to the regular functioning of the department through various committee work, participation in departmental extracurricular activities, and pursuit of the goals outlined in the department's strategic plan. * Pursue a scholarly agenda and engage in other professional activities. * Serve the college through committee work, the development of new student learning opportunities, and the enrichment of campus-community partnerships. Education and/or Experience * An earned PhD in History is required by August 1, 2021. * Record of effective teaching. * Demonstrated potential for research and a clear research agenda. * Strong Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications: * Ability to teach nineteenth-century American history in a global context as well as courses in public history, women's history, or environmental history. * Ability to collaborate with students and faculty across disciplines. * Ability to teach in online and hybrid settings. Technology Skills * Candidates must be familiar and comfortable with the technologies used routinely in the academic world today, including but not limited to word processing, classroom presentation software, course and information management systems, communications and social media, and online research tools. * Fluency in digital media, with the ability to enhance the department's presence online and mentor students in digital humanities applications, is a plus for candidates in this search. Language Skills Excellent spoken and written English with strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to speak effectively before groups required. Other languages may be desirable or necessary, as appropriate to the candidate's research field. Mathematical Skills The candidate must have the mathematical skills needed to manage grading and budgets. Additional quantitative skills may enhance the candidate's research profile, depending on the candidate's specific research. Other Skills and Abilities This position requires the following: * excellent teaching skills, including the ability to plan courses and assignments; * organize, present, and explain information clearly; * understand and answer student questions; * work with students of differing abilities; * teach writing and research through a variety of assignments; * advise and mentor students at different stages of their college careers; * assess student progress accurately and fairly; * understanding of higher education generally and the ability to work successfully as a member of a small department.
