Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792

Background

A Research Fellow (Grade 7) is required to join the team working on an NIHR-funded project exploring relationships between self-harm and eating disorders, led by Dr Anna Lavis in the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham.

The study comprises both quantitative and qualitative methods research, as well as public engagement and networking activities. The post holder will have primary responsibility for both quantitative and qualitative data collection. They will also undertake data analysis and dissemination activities and research administration duties, and will support the team in producing papers for publication and funder reports.

Job Summary

• Collect longitudinal data using Experience sampling method (ESM) and semi-structured interviewing in three NHS trusts
• Analyse longitudinal data using multilevel modelling and thematic analysis as appropriate, with guidance from the PI and Co-Is
• Produce papers for publication and funder reports, with guidance and support from the PI and Co-Is
• Disseminate research findings in internal and external research seminars and to a range of stakeholders
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understandings of the relationship between self-harm and eating disorders
• Maintain good working relationships with team members, academic collaborators and stakeholders
• Undertake management/administration arising from research
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
• Contribute to public engagement activities related to the current project under supervision of the PI

Main Duties

• Work within the specified research project and contribute to writing reports and bids that ensue from the findings and/or concepts of the research
• Operate within the specialism of mixed-methods applied mental health research
• Analyse and interpret research findings and results, and disseminate these across a variety of academic, clinical and third-sector contexts
• Take a lead in the public engagement and networking activities of the study
• Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
• Contribute to writing bids for research funding

Person Specification

• Essential: First degree and a higher degree (or near to completion) in anthropology/sociology/psychology or a related subject.
• Essential: High level analytical capability
• Essential: Interest in mental health
• Essential: Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Essential: Experience of mixed-methods research in relation to a health topic
• Essential: Good understanding and/or experience of undertaking experience sampling methodology and multilevel modelling.
• Essential: Good understanding and/or experience of undertaking semi-structured interviewing and thematic analysis.
• Desirable: Knowledge of the clinical, psychological and sociological/anthropological literature on self-harm and/ or eating disorders.
• Desirable: Experience of research in mental health and with vulnerable groups
