Job Description Summary: The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health is seeking Laboratory Assistant to join our GWU COVID-19 surveillance laboratory. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a high-complexity testing laboratory as a part of a public health laboratory team to collect, test, and analyze samples collected from George Washington University community and for other COVID-19 related testing and research activities. This position will include opportunities to participate in data analysis, interpretation, and reporting and, time permitting, to conduct field work such as sample collection. The Laboratory Assistant will be supervised day-to-day by a laboratory supervisor, and will work closely with other members of the laboratory team. The successful candidate will have experience with microbiological or medical laboratory technician work, will be well-organized, self-motivated, able to work independently and as a team, and must be able to manage their time efficiently. Responsibilities include: * Performing laboratory work according to protocols, including sample processing under BSL-2+ conditions, nucleic acid extraction, serological analysis by ELISA, and molecular analysis by quantitative real-time PCR. * Implementing laboratory protocols on the bench-top and in the biosafety cabinet, as well as using liquid-handling robots with assistance from supervisor and other laboratory staff. * Participating in general laboratory activities, such as inventory, equipment maintenance, and laboratory disinfection and cleanup. * Performing data entry and analysis, with guidance from laboratory supervisor and Laboratory Director. * May involve field work (i.e. sample collection). The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. This is a limited term position for up to 1 year. Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: * 1 year of full-time experience in a clinical or microbiology laboratory, or equivalent in undergraduate/graduate laboratory experience. * Laboratory experience in molecular-based (e.g. RTq-PCR) and/or immunology-based (e.g. serology) techniques. * Proficiency in data entry, cleaning, and analysis. * Prior experience in preparation of reports. * Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills. * Self-motivated and able to multi-task, set priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines. * Experience working in a BSL-2 or BSL-2+ laboratory setting or in a medical laboratory. * Experience with molecular analysis methods (e.g. PCR, real-time PCR, etc.) * Experience with serological analysis methods (e.g. ELISA) Typical Hiring Range $18.57 - $25.93 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
