Job Description
Responsible for conducting week-long, topic specific, grade blocked (K-9th), STEAM classes. The instructor delivers and modifies hands-on curriculum ensuring students are safely supervised and engaged. This position also communicates within the Classes team and to families while following written procedures.

Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as:
  • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers, throughout the organization;
  • Supporting OMSI's Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives;

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engaging week-long STEAM curriculum for students in grades K-9;
  • Supervise students to ensure a safe, fun, and engaging environment for up to 24 students (non-pandemic class numbers - summer 2021 will comply with state and local ordinances);
  • Communicate effectively with students, caregivers, co-workers, and supervisors about programming expectations and procedures;
  • Communicate with community organizations and other outside contacts (non-pandemic);
  • Prepare and organize classroom to facilitate an effective learning environment;
  • Develop and/or modify STEAM curriculum for designated grades from K-9;
  • Actively integrate diversity, equity, access, and inclusion across your work;

Working Conditions:
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly
  • This position is special project, working 40 hours/week;
  • Physical Demands: 50% Standing 10% Sitting 40% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling 50 Pounds
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus);
  • Work environment includes wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electric shock;
  • Noise level ranges from very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test) to very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert);

Secondary Functions:
  • Develop and/or modify STEAM curriculum for designated grades from K-9;
  • Provide first aid care to participants and staff when necessary;
  • Provide classroom and peer support, and other tasks as needed, as assigned by the Classes and Outreach Manager;


  • Comfortable leading groups of students;
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to pivot between individual and team work;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products;
  • Exercises sound judgement while upholding high integrity and ethical standards;
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills that adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements;

  • Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English);
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;

Education & Work Experience:

  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree;
  • Prior classroom, enrichment, or youth engagement experience;

  • Demonstrated experience working in a STEAM education-based environment;

Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:

  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check and reference checks;
  • Current CPR and first aid certification required;
