POSITION OVERVIEW Applications accepted from:ALL PERSONS INTERESTED Division: DPC Section:Bureau of Laboratory Services Reporting Location: 2250 Holcombe Blvd. Workdays & Hours:M - F, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.* (*Subject to change) Some evenings and weekends DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Houston Health Department has an exciting opportunity for Microbiologist I to perform highly technical bacteriological, serological and/or virological laboratory work according to clearly prescribed procedures and laboratory techniques or developmental methods. 1. Entry level position that performs diagnostic testing on clinical samples 2. Perform routine quality assurance duties 3. Assist with ongoing section projects to include data entry and record maintenance. 4. Maintain supply inventory. 5. Package and ship samples as needed. 6. Report test results and complete related monthly and quarterly reports. WORKING CONDITIONS The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bacteriology, Microbiology or a closely related field is required. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS None. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS None. PREFERENCES Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. Preference will be given to candidates that have a bachelor's degree in a life science and that have completed at least one life science related lab course during their academic study.
