The mission of the Boston Public Schools Department of Adult Education and Community Services is to provide a variety of high-quality educational services to BPS parents, and Boston residents in order to improve their educational, political, and economic status.

The Boston Public Schools Department of Adult Education serves adult students who want to learn English, improve their academic level and/or graduate from high school. The department operates a day and evening program. Priority is given to parents of school-age children in order to empower them to become advocates for their families and to become more involved in their children's education.

We are looking for a staff member to join our energetic team and has a proven track record of working successfully with adult students who face academic and personal challenges.

Terms/Salary: BPS Adult Education Instructor daily rate with benefits.

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:30-3:30.

* Teach 4 competency-based ELA classes each semester. Each class is 2 hours two times per week.
* Develop and modify contextualized curriculum and daily lesson plans.
* Contribute to ongoing curriculum development and alignment.
* Integrate technology in the classroom.
* Administer regular, ongoing in-class assessments.
* Support, monitor, collect and analyze data relative to student's academic performance goals and attendance.
* Make program expectations clear to students at the beginning of each new semester.
* Oversee ELA portfolio task completion (follow a system in place).
* Communicate classroom/student issues to Student Success Specialist and/or Director in a timely manner.
* Perform other duties as requested by the Director.

Reports to: Senior Director of Adult Education

Qualifications (Required)

* Bachelor's degree or higher in Education or related field required.
* 3-5 years Adult Basic Education or high school teaching experience preferred
* Understanding of competency-based education.
* Computer/technology proficiency (Google Suite, document cameras, mobile apps, Zoom, etc.)
* Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills
* Familiarity with DESE CCRS for Adults or MA High School ELA Standards
* Professional behaviors include punctuality, organization, high expectations, respect, and the ability to maintain a safe and culturally sensitive learning environment.

Preferred (one or more)

* Bilingual in Spanish, Cape Verdean, or Haitian Creole a strong plus.
* ELA, ESL, Special Education, or ABE certification.
* Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students.
* Experience proctoring the TABE, MAPT, or BEST Plus.
