Are you a successful post-doctoral researcher? We are looking for an experienced researcher to join our University of Southampton asthma and allergy group. The goal of the project is to understand the burden, patterns and aetiology of food allergy in adults. It will build on all the work we have undertaken on childhood food allergy. The project is funded by the Food Standards Agency.

The successful candidate must have a doctorate and expertise in data analysis. They may have an epidemiological or biostatistical focus. Application from clinicians are welcomed, they are encouraged to discuss the opportunities in Southampton with Professor Graham Roberts. Experience with use of STATA, SAS, R or similar is essential. The candidate should have a strong publication record. The candidate should be interested in population health and understanding disease patterns across the population. They will have an opportunity to work in an epidemiology group with an international profile. There will be an opportunity to supervise PhD, DM or Master students.

Through our work on childhood food allergy, we now have an excellent understanding of its epidemiology and pathophysiology. We have now used this to deliver successful preventive strategies. The Food Standard Agency is now looking to accelerate our understanding of food allergy in adults where our knowledge is much more limited. We are collaborating on the project with Professor Clare Mills and Angela Simpson at the University of Manchester and Professor Ronald van Ree at the University of Amsterdam. Together we will profile 10,000 participants from a community survey and others from our 1989 Isle of Wight birth cohort and the Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study birth cohort. We aim to further our understanding of adult food allergy by combining a cross-sectional analytical approach in the community and a longitudinal one in the cohort.

The successful candidate will join a team of academic clinicians, epidemiologists, scientists, statisticians and dieticians working on the project. Your role would firstly be to plan, coordinate and participate in the delivery of the Isle of Wight and Southampton work in collaboration with the Manchester site. You will also lead the data analysis, in collaboration with other team members. Our cohorts are based on the Isle of Wight and you would be expected to spend some time on the island at our David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre at St Mary's Hospital.

The position is funded at 0.75 fulltime equivalent for 15 months until December 2022; this can be varied within the needs of the project. There is an expectation that the position will be extended to the end of December 2022. We would be keen to support the successful candidate to develop their career in the Faculty of Medicine. In particular, we would want to provide support and mentorship to help the postdoctoral research fellow successfully apply for a personal fellowship.

For further information please contact Professor Graham Roberts ( g.c.roberts@soton.ac.uk ).

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
