The role

Applications are sought for the research post in RF Cyber Security within the Communication Systems and Networks research group at the University of Bristol. The successful applicant will join the UKRI Prosperity Partnership on Secure Wireless Agile Networks (SWAN) https://www.swan-partnership.ac.uk/, with specific skills in one or more of the following areas: ML/AI in RF cyber attack detection, RF Fingerprinting, composite antenna/channel characterisation and source localisation, secure protocols for spectrum sharing.

Main Job Purpose

To conduct leading edge research in one or more of the activities of the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership in the field of Secure Wireless Agile Networks (SWAN) within the Communications Systems & Networks research group at the University of Bristol. The CSN group is part of the wider activity delivered by Bristol's Smart Internet Lab . The SWAN partnership includes Toshiba Research Europe Limited (Bristol Research & Innovation Laboratory), Roke Manor Research Limited and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) https://www.swan-partnership.ac.uk/

What will you be doing

Research Responsibilities:

Proactively contribute and enhance research in one or more of SWAN's themes:

Application of ML/AI in the detection of RF Cyber attacks;
    • RF Fingerprinting for Cyber Intrusion Detection;
    • RF signature profiling at the antenna channel interface for intrusion detection;
    • Secure Spectrum Sharing, including robust protocols and free spectrum detection;
    • Applicant's choice aligning with the SWAN Research Challenges .
  • Performance assessment of candidate algorithms using mathematical analysis and simulation tools for benchmarking and down-selection ready for further appraisal.
  • Migration of design (algorithm, protocol, methodology etc) to a test-bed implementation.
  • Collaborate and engage with internal and external partners within the SWAN Partnership.
  • Submit papers for publication to high-impact journals and/or prestigious conferences.


You should apply if

Essential:
  • Experience in wireless system design and performance analysis
  • Interest in security topics and implications for wireless networks.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Application of ML/AI to wireless networks
    • Application of ML/AI for cyber-attack detection
    • Antenna design and channel characterisation for source localisation
    • Spectrum sharing, free spectrum detection and protocol design
  • Experience with RF/wireless simulation tools
  • Track record of innovative and creative research in the fields of RF systems, physical layer wireless design evidenced by publications, patents or products.

Desirable:
  • Knowledge of 5G physical layer specifications
  • Knowledge of low power wide area network technologies (e.g., LoRaWAN, Sigfox, etc.)
  • Experience of real time digital signal processing implementation
  • Experience in hardware prototyping of RF/wireless systems, use of instruments and measurement automation.
