The University of Southampton, in partnership with University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust, is looking to recruit an outstanding academic hepatologist to join the current hepatology team of consultants (4 NHS and 1 University).

The post will be jointly held between The University of Southampton (5PAs) and University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) NHS Trust (5PAs).

The successful candidate will work 50% as a clinical academic for the University of Southampton and 50% of the time in the NHS, the post will be hosted by the University.

This role is offered on a full time, permanent basis.

Working with colleagues across the University and in the local NHS we have strengthened our position as a renowned centre for translational research, leading innovative learning and discovery for better health across the life-course.

In this context, we are looking to appoint an outstanding senior academic to develop and lead a major programme of funded clinical research in the field of hepatology.

UHS provides healthcare to 1.9million people living in Southampton and South Hampshire, plus specialist services to >3.7million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands. The Trust is a major centre for teaching and research. We provide a high-quality care in Hepatology including a number of specialist tertiary level services:

The JAG accredited 7 room Endoscopy Unit provides the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

There is a supraregional HPB cancer and Interventional Radiology

We are the lead centre for the Wessex HCV ODN

What We Are Looking For

Those trained in the UK must have evidence of Higher Speciality Training leading to a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Gastroenterology and General Medicine or be within three months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Full JAG accreditation in gastroscopy is a requirement of this post.

Applicants Must Have
  • A Minimum of 3 months experience in a Transplant Centre
  • At least 18 months in a Level 2 Hepatology Centre
  • A PhD and evidence of excellence in research, teaching and a track record in generating external grant income. The research interests of the applicant should complement those of the current hepatology team and an interest in public health and/or community hepatology is desirable.
  • Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.


Additional Information

Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.
