Company Summary

AIOnco, Inc. is a subsidiary company of Avellino Lab USA, Inc., a pre-IPO world leader in genetic diagnostics and gene therapy research with a core specialty in ophthalmology. AIOnco is a startup. AIOnco is leading the way towards precision medicine by developing cancer-related diagnostics and predictive platforms through merging Artificial Intelligence, heterogeneous data, and clinical research oncology.

Avellino developed the first commercially available genetic test for corneal dystrophy, providing a fast and accurate test to help guide physicians in treating their patients to prevent or delay vision loss. Avellino continues to innovate and has developed a next-generation sequencing (NGS) test for keratoconus, another eye condition. In addition to the diagnosis of these progressive eye diseases, Avellino is also developing state-of-the-art siRNA and CRISPR gene editing programs for corneal dystrophies and for treatment technologies that can be applied to diseases beyond ophthalmology. These therapies have been proven in the lab, and Avellino will proceed with human trials in the very near future. Avellino operates globally and has been recognized for its work, including being named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.

Avellino developed a FDA EUA authorized coronavirus diagnostic test - the Avellino SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 Test (AvellinoCoV2 Test) - a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) that uses Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase (RT)-PCR for the presumptive in vitro qualitative detection of nucleic acid from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Avellino has ramped up operations to help meet the worldwide need for coronavirus testing.

Position Summary

AIOnco seeks a full-time Head of AI/ML. This candidate will be responsible for developing an organization and hiring best-in-class to architect and design an artificial intelligence/machine learning platform for the identification of genomic and phenotypic biomarkers. This candidate will team up with and/or lead other AI experts and scientists in ophthalmology, genetics, and oncology to architect and develop a ground-breaking, commercially viable AI system backed by real data. This candidate will lead a team to develop artificial intelligence/machine learning platform for actionable output utilized by bioinformatics, oncology researchers, clinical oncologists, others in biotech, pharmaceutical companies, and medical professionals. This candidate will work with genomic information, phenotype information including biomarkers, information from medical records, and/or environmental information. Specifically, this candidate will develop a system that takes heterogeneous information to predict different types of cancer.

This candidate will be responsible for working with industry and academic partners to gather information for tumor samples, genetic information for those tumor patients, medical records for those tumor patients, and manage and/or assist in managing those relationships. This candidate will work with others in AIOnco for compliance, e.g. HIPAA, CBP, FDA, etc. as needed.

This candidate will formulate plans and proposals and execute programs for AIOnco's AI platform and Big Data needs. This candidate will interact with external companies for collaborative R&D as well as scientific due diligence. You will facilitate projects involving oncology scientist and artificial intelligence software engineers to design and build an artificial intelligence system. The candidate will marshal resources (internal and external) to develop our AI platform to predict the different types of cancer and provide overall risk scores as well as polygenic risk scores to help predict and/or diagnose risk of cancer for patients. The candidate will direct collection of academic and industry papers to provide potential inputs into our AI platform. You will help assess reliability and robustness of results from these papers to aid in their utilization into the architecture of the AI platform.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

* Set direction, form, develop, and lead the AI team to provide information on clinical oncology and oncology research
* Work with the bioinformatics team to develop pipeline for analysis of databases of genomic and phenotype biomarkers
* Direct mining of research (i.e., papers) on AI/ML related to oncology and genetic testing to confirm or add inputs / features into the AI architecture (for example, driver genes, passenger genes, mutations to proto-oncogenes, mutations to tumor suppressor genes, coding region, noncoding region, etc.).
* Direct mining of research on oncology not solely related to genetics, such as radiological images, biomarkers, environmental information, demographic information, medical records, etc. that may meaningfully add to the robustness, specificity, sensitivity, and localization of the predictions generated by the AI platform
* Work with others on research for liquid biopsy technologies related to oncology to add to the robustness of the predications generated by the AI platform and to prepare for gene panel testing with tissue and/or liquid biopsy
* Work with others on lab strategy and lab testing for gene panels
* Work with other team members to develop organization structure to develop, deploy, support, and update of AI platform
* Work with other team members to provide inputs for Big Data platform
* Work with other team members to provide inputs for architecting pipeline between Big Data platform and AI platform
* Work with other team members for lab work for sequencing tumor samples and gene panels

Minimum Requirements

* 10+ years of biotech experience including genetics, oncology, phenotype data, AI/ML
* PhD in genetics and/or oncology or a related field
* Understanding of AI/ML, clinical oncology, oncology research, genetics, statistics

Preferred Experiences

* Experience in managing software development utilizing machine learning and deep learning algorithms
* Familiarity with liquid biopsy for cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and ctDNA (cell tumor DNA) from blood samples as well as other liquid samples

Competencies

* Self-motivated, energetic, organized, and results oriented with an entrepreneurial mentality
* Ability to multitask and prioritize competing deadlines
* Problem solving, decision-making, and technical learning
* Strong written and oral communication skills
* Strong administrative and organizational skills
