GRO Biosciences (GRObio) is hiring a scientist-level individual to develop and extend the company's recoded organism technology. Recoded organisms enable efficient production of proteins using an expanded amino acid alphabet. This expanded amino acid alphabet allows us to build proteins with novel functions and properties. Imagine working for a biotechnology company that doesn't have to play by the rules of its competitors. With the tools at GRObio you'll have the opportunity to solve problems once considered impossible.

The selected candidate for this position will work within the Chemistry Expansion division, enabling the scalable incorporation of new amino acids into proteins. Major job responsibilities include designing translation machinery for new amino acids, and implementing frameworks to model the structural and functional implications of nonstandard amino acid incorporation into proteins of interest. Day-to-day activities include computational protein design, planning and executing experiments based on these predictions, analyzing data, and collaborating with other team members. A critical aspect of this job is interfacing with our automation teams and integrating into their operational framework to screen large candidate libraries. The successful applicant will have the unique opportunity of realizing their designs through GRObio's proprietary high-throughput robotics pipeline.

Responsibilities
  • Develop computational workflows to engineer translational machinery within our recoded organism platform
  • Utilize developed workflows to select candidates for high-throughput analyses
  • Prospectively model structural and functional enhancements to proteins enabled by new amino acid chemistries
  • Interface with GRObio's high-throughput robotics operational team to screen and select successful candidates
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed research environment
  • Support assay development to evaluate translational efficiency and fidelity
  • Diligently record progress in our electronic lab notebook and LIMS systems
  • Clearly communicate results and recommendations with team both in-person and remotely

Significant research experience in at least two of the following areas:
  • Rational protein engineering
  • Unbiased approaches to protein engineering
  • Bioinformatic analyses of large datasets
  • DNA library design, construction and screening

Preferred experience
  • Screening/selection techniques such as phage and yeast display
  • Post-doctoral and/or industrial work experience
