The role

The Department of Civil Engineering is seeking to appoint a highly capable researcher with an interest in understanding inter- and transdisciplinary research. The successful applicant will join a large, newly formed research consortium whose aim is to reduce the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases on urban populations by transforming the UK's urban planning and development systems.

This maternity cover post will make an important contribution to the 5-year TRUUD project - Tackling the Root Causes Upstream of Unhealthy Urban Development - funded by the UK Prevention Research Partnership (administered by the Medical Research Council). This project involves collaboration across a wide range of disciplines comprising engineering, public policy, public health, urban studies, law, economics, management, real estate and lay public engagement, and this multi-disciplinary consortium comprises academics from five leading UK research universities (Bristol, Bath, University of the West of England, Manchester and Reading).

Research collaborations throw up many challenges, such as overcoming disciplinary silos and integrating ideas and knowledge. There will also be the opportunity and need to contribute to the development of a community of practice across the UKPRP projects in a theme investigating what makes 'good' inter/trans-disciplinary research.

In this role, you would be well-supported and part of a team of four academics working collaboratively on the cross-cutting systems science and the meta-research and evaluation. You will be managed by Dr Ges Rosenberg (Department of Mechanical Engineering) and will report on activities both to Dr Rosenberg and Dr Neil Carhart (Department of Civil Engineering). You will also be part of the TRUUD research consortium and undertaking your research in an internationally leading University.

Interviews will be held in mid-August 2020 with a start date as soon as possible afterwards.

For informal queries regarding the role please contact Dr Ges Rosenberg:

What will you be doing?

This role will support deliver a meta-research and evaluation of the TRUUD research during a pivotal stage in the project. It will require you to observe, describe and facilitate coproduced learning from the multidisciplinary research project, with the aim of maximising research impact:
  • How can we better understand and characterise inter- and trans-disciplinary research and use this to enhance research impact?
  • What learning and reflection can be deployed to enhance the impact of TRUUD itself during the course of the project?

This research over the maternity period will entail conducting a second round of qualitative interviewing and data analysis, plus organising and running of a number of workshops according to need. The results will be delivered in a written report, and there is the intention that this research can be self-contained, giving the opportunity of delivering a conference paper or journal article at the end. In addition, there will be the need to support the formation of the UKPRP community of practice and to help facilitate learning and knowledge sharing across the networks and research consortia.
