Summary This is a non-benefitted, budgeted position limited to 999 hours per fiscal year. This is not a PERS eligible position. The City of Escondido is hiring enthusiastic and fun Water Safety Instructors to teach with our year-round Learn to Swim Program. Applicants must be available a minimum of 15 hours a week between the hours of 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. during Summer and 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. during the Spring and Fall. Key responsibilities include: * Instruct all levels of Swim lessons, including following lesson plans, evaluating and testing students, preparing student certificates,and providing feedback for parents/guardians. * Demonstrate preventativelifeguardingskills. * Activate Emergency Action Plan, rescue swimmers in distress, and render first aid as needed. * Provide through documentation for necessary forms and reports. * Enforce pool rules and regulations. * Maintain positive public relations, and be knowledgeable in Community Service programs. * Report pool repairs as necessary to supervisors. * Maintain safe and clean conditions in pool and bathroom areas. * Demonstrate proper cash handling skills, and maintain an accurate till. * Register participants in recreation software. * Attend in-service trainings. * Other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate for this position will: * Enjoying teaching swim lessons a diverse group of ages and abilities in an outdoor Aquatics facility. * Be a positive team player focused on creating a fun and welcoming learn to swim experience for all. * Be able to multitask and ensure a safe and fun swimming environment. Minimum requirements: * Must be 16 years of age. Work permit required for students under 18 years of age. * Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification * American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent * CPR for the Professional Rescuer * Title 22 certification Certifications are not required at time of interview.Current certifications required upon hiring. SELECTION PROCEDURE Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to appear for testing. All positions require the ability to read, write and speak English. Types of tests may include written and/or oral examination, physical agility, practical exam or other appropriate job-related selection process. When testing is completed, candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list in the order of their test score. Selection for appointments is made from names certified on the eligibility list. All appointments are subject to the successful completion of background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. Qualification by a medical examination will be required at the time of appointment. After appointment, classified employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period to be eligible for regular status. In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must produce proof of eligibility to work in the United States within the first three days of their employment. The City of Escondido participates in E-Verify®. The Loyalty Oath will be administered to all new employees on their first day of hire.
