The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology - Virology Division has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, day shift, MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 1 OR TRAINEE. GENERAL DUTIES: * Perform clinical virology diagnostic laboratory tests; record, evaluate and interpret test results; contact appropriate personnel for tests with unusual or critical findings. * Understands and demonstrates competency performing a variety of laboratory techniques that require interpretative knowledge {e.g., DNA extraction, Real-Time PCR). * Interpret test results critically. * Perform all quality control procedures correctly and make appropriate decisions based on QC results. Understand quality control requirements and apply knowledge to validate test results. * Enter results and data into computer and perform appropriate cross checks to minimize clerical errors. * Understand, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of laboratory equipment such as automated DNA extraction systems, Real-Time PCR systems, centrifuge, balance, computers, LIS terminals. * Receive and unpack or prepare and ship biohazard/infectious materials in accordance with DOT and IATA regulations. Respond to any shipment problem report in a timely fashion. Inform supervisory personnel and document response. * Inventory samples. * Prepare and process samples for transport and/or testing. * Perform all preventive maintenance procedures and clean work area upon completion of tasks. * Prepare reagents and verify quality control of the materials. * Follow all established procedures for labeling and storage of materials. * Maintain complete, accurate, legible records on worksheets including all results and other documentation. Thoroughly document any modifications. * Report study data to data manager and Pl in the format and time-line established for each study. * Assist in development or evaluation of new procedures and instruments as assigned. Take calls to perform testing as needed for either patient care or clinical studies. * Resource to other lab personnel including Clinical Laboratory Technicians and Specimen Processing Technicians. * Demonstrate techniques and share practical knowledge as needed with new employees, post- doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, residents, medical students, and medical technology students. * Attend in-services and continuing education as required or available. * Maintain ASCP or other certification per guidelines of National Organization. * Perform other related duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: This position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. Requirements for MLS Trainee Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination. Requirements for MLS 1 Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND Current Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division. AND One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count towards the experience requirement.
