The Ladiges Lab at the University of Washington has an opening for a Research Scientist 1. The purpose of the research is the enhancement of healthy aging and prevention of age-related diseases. The focus is on projects testing anti-aging drugs in mice, characterizing geropathology endpoints as indicators of biological aging, and developing treatment strategies for age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, pulmonary fibrosis, and Covid19. RESPONSIBILITIES * Perform and assist with mouse studies (includes cognitive, behavioral, and physiological assays, monitoring, weighing, administration of drug treatments). * Acquisition of tissue specimens (requires excellent hand-eye coordination). * Perform tissue processing and standard histology using accepted methods and techniques (fixing, decalcification, sectioning, and staining of tissue). * Learn techniques for cryostat tissue processing and staining. * Keep highly accurate records of specimens received, processed and stored. * Become proficient in performing PCR procedures, cell culture, microplate assays, immunoblotting, and Luminex applications. * Collect, compile (e.g. entering data into Excel spreadsheet and generating graphs) and correlate data and recognize discrepancies in results. * Also contribute data/findings for use in reports, documents or oral/written presentations. * Participate in developing conclusions from experimental data collected. * Maintain accurate and up to date research notebooks that provide sufficient detailed information for reproducing results or procedures by other individuals. * Maintain laboratory equipment. * Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals and provide ideas for improved efficiency. * Define and improve practices from experiences on small projects. * Administrative duties including but not limited to purchasing, maintaining inventory, data entry, filing, scheduling meetings and updating website. * Learn new techniques as required for optimal job performance. * Communicate with collaborators and management on progress. * Summarize data and prepare research notes. * Perform related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS * Bachelor's degree in biology or related field. * Minimum of 1 year of job-related experience. Additional requirements: * Experience with mouse cognitive, behavioral, and physiological assays. * Experience with mouse dissection and tissue collection. * Highly organized and attentive to detail. * Ability to work in a team and individually. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements. DESIRED REQUIREMENTS * Experience with immunohistochemistry, PCR, and cell culture techniques. * Experience with basic statistical analysis.
