Staff Scientist

The Leo Wang Lab at City of Hope is hiring a staff scientist with expertise and interest in fundamental immune signaling to join our group in the Department of Immunooncology. We couple protein-focused molecular techniques (mass spectrometry, capillary Western blot, flow cytometry, CyTOF) with in vitro and in vivo disease models to define the molecular basis of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) signaling and activation. We correlate these fundamental proteomic pathways with their functional consequences, and use this information to aid in the rational design of solid-tumor targeted CAR constructs with improved persistence and potency. Scientists with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and ≥5 years of postdoctoral experience are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be bright, ambitious, diligent, meticulous, collaborative, and creative. Core competencies include cell and molecular biology, flow cytometry, protein biochemistry, and mouse work. Computational competency (R, Python) is a plus. Candidates need not wish to pursue a tenure-track academic faculty position, but must be able to design and execute scientific projects independently. Successful candidates must be able to generate data quickly and carefully, synthesize it to design new experiments, and communicate findings efficiently in manuscript form.

Our lab is well-resourced, with research support from the NIH and multiple foundations. Staff scientists will not be required to obtain their own funding. Our lab and institution are also highly collaborative, and staff scientists will be required to be able to work well with others. Additionally, those who show an aptitude for mentorship will be given the opportunity to supervise junior researchers directly.

Key Responsibilities include:

Design and lead projects focused on CAR T cell signaling in multiple model systems, using canonical TCR signaling as a conceptual framework.
Coordinate lab tasks and operations among multiple lab members, including ordering, inventory, and other essential lab functions.
Keep detailed and accurate logs of experimental design and primary data, analysis, and synthesis.
Prepare data presentations and manuscripts for publication.
Initiate and maintain collaborations with other labs.
Travel to meetings to represent the lab and to present new data.

Extensive prior experience in immunology or a closely related field.
Good English oral and written communication skills; must be able to prepare scientific manuscripts.
