Required:
  • Medical degree (MD) or PhD degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Outstanding scholarship in regenerative medicine field(s).
  • Demonstrated record in faculty, trainee and student mentorship and teaching.
  • Demonstrated record of leadership and achievement in academic medicine as evidenced by:
    • excellent track-record of federal funding.
    • experience in leading significant single or multi-site research programs.
    • success in recruiting exceptional clinical and/or bench scientists.

Overview:

The University Medical School seeks an innovative, driven leader to direct the school's Stem Cell Institute (SCI). This is a priority research area for the Medical School with a strong team, robust research program, and growing visibility within the state and nationally. The successful candidate will be strategic, collaborative, able to leverage the resources available through the Medical School, University and community, and unafraid to harness the potential in the SCI. The new director will hold an endowed chair.

The SCI's vision is to use stem cell biology to change the practice of medicine through discovery, education, and translation. The researchers and faculty of the SCI explore the science of stem cell biology with the purposes of responding to the medical needs of today and educating the researchers of tomorrow.

The Stem Cell Institute:
  • Includes 50 investigators of all ranks from 25 collaborating university departments that participate in stem cell research.
  • Harbors several areas of strength: spinal cord/brain injury and disease, diabetes, heart disease, stem cell genomic editing and bioprinting/bioengineering.
  • Has an affiliated large-scale cell processing facility.
  • Offers a Master's program in Stem Cell Biology.
  • Sponsors an interdisciplinary Stem Cell Biology NIH Training Grant.
  • Offers a Stem Cell Business Incubator to support early stage businesses.


The SCI Director responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing and leading the SCI's stem cell biology research program.
  • Spearheading development efforts to grow resources and opportunities within the SCI.
  • Developing and nurturing the identity of the SCI as a resource for faculty throughout the university.
  • Recruiting junior faculty and collaborating with Medical School departments to identify suitable tenure homes.
  • Mentoring junior and mid-career SCI faculty.
  • Administering the SCI budget.
  • Maintaining and developing the SCI's international, national, and local identity as a frontrunner in basic studies and in the clinical translation of stem cell-based therapies.
  • Maintaining and developing the SCI's identity as a resource for stem cell information, research collaboration, and education.
  • Ensuring awareness that the SCI is a source of information for the community and serves as an advocate for the potential of stem cell research.
