The Center for Applied Public Health Research in the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Division of RTI International is currently seeking a senior epidemiologist. The successful candidate will provide overall leadership, management, and coordination for domestic and international epidemiologic and public health-related studies/activities. The candidate will serve as principal investigator or project director of contracts, cooperative agreements and/or grants funded by NIH, CDC, and/or DTRA that may involve registries, surveillance, and epidemiology studies in the areas of infectious and chronic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, environmental health, and modeling. We require candidates who have a proven track record in writing and winning grants, leading research, and participating in multi-entity collaborations. This position is preferred to be based in RTP, NC, Rockville, MD, or Washington, DC. However, will consider telecommuters.

Responsibilities:

Develop and nurture a funded research portfolio. Focus areas can include a wide range of chronic and infectious diseases with particular emphasis on topics of interest to NIH, CDC, and DTRA.  
Leverage research ideas to design, document, and oversee the development of proposals and projects. Identify other disciplines to involve in proposals and projects and coordinate or lead inter-disciplinary teams.
Lead proposals of significant technical or organizational complexity, monetary value, or strategic importance. 
Lead epidemiology research studies as principal investigator, project director, and associate project director; provide fiscal oversight to project budgets. 
Develop, direct, and implement appropriate studies within the context of the organization's research program including study design, protocol development, data collection and management, project coordination, and research administration and/or investigator-led studies.
Contribute deep understanding of epidemiologic methods during study design, conduct, and data analysis; synthesize findings in context of existing knowledge; author study reports and manuscripts. 
Contribute to scientific stature by publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at professional, scientific, or technical meetings.
Provide mentorship of junior staff for succession planning, and to advance their scientific stature and professional development. 
Conduct domestic and international project related travel, as required.

Qualifications:

Doctorate degree in epidemiology with a concentration in chronic or infectious diseases or environmental health.
Evidence of ability to win, manage, and monitor government contracts, grants, or cooperative agreements.
Experience in a leadership role for at least 7 years as at least a co-principal investigator or project director.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, including at least 15 peer-reviewed publications. 
Expertise in epidemiologic methods including study design (cross-sectional, cohort, case-cohort, case-control, and randomized designs), study conduct, critical operational monitoring, and data analysis and interpretation.
Attention to detail and accuracy; ensure projects meet RTI's and client's quality expectations.
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
