Lecturer of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, IN invites applications to fill one non-tenured teaching position at the rank of Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering of the School of Engineering. The initial contract term for this position is one year to begin January 1, 2022. Contract renewal is subject to satisfactory performance of the selected candidate and availability of funding for the position.

Minimum Qualification

• PhD degree in Civil Engineering or related field by the start of the appointment
• Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

Successful candidates are expected to

• Teach undergraduate- and graduate-level geotechnical engineering courses such as Surveying & GIS, Soil Engineering, etc.
• Teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses on water resource and environmental engineering such as Fluid Mechanics, Introduction to Environmental Engineering, Engineering Hydrology and Hydraulics, etc.
• Supervise senior design projects and/or student competition teams.

The College of Engineering and Sciences (CES) serves about 1,400 undergraduate students and 120 graduate students across a wide range of academic programs. The college includes Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry/Physics, Mathematics/Statistics, and the School of Engineering.

PNW's School of Engineering within CES comprises three departments: Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Closely affiliated with the School are two distinguished and award-winning research centers, the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) and the Purdue Water Institute (PWI).

The School is actively working to raise the profile of PNW's engineering programs while continuing excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, increasing campus diversity, and building partnerships outside of the university that will benefit students, faculty, staff, and the region the University serves. In addition, the School is expanding facilities and undertaking major capital improvements across both campuses. A new Engineering Design Studio just opened in the Fall of 2020.

The Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MCE) is a multi-disciplinary unit serving about 350 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. The department includes 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, and one staff member. The unit offers bachelor's degrees in Mechanical, and Civil Engineering, as well as master's degrees in Mechanical and Interdisciplinary Engineering with a concentration in Civil Engineering.

The MCE department takes pride in their students regularly participating in a host of engineering competitions. MCE teams have won many awards in regional, national, and international events including NASA's Great Moon Buggy Race and Human Exploration Rover Challenge, SAE Formula One, EV Gran Prix, ASCE Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge, ASHRAE Best Paper, and AIST Best Paper competitions. Faculty are actively involved in research and have garnered awards or patents for their work.
