Responsibilities

The School of Communication at Florida State University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track assistant professor position with a specialization in strategic communication to begin in the fall 2022 semester. Public Relations (PR) or Advertising (ADV) expertise in subfield areas such as environmental, crisis, advocacy, multicultural marketing, and health communication is strongly preferred. All methodological approaches are welcomed.

Teaching:

This faculty position carries an expectation of excellent teaching. As such, evidence of teaching effectiveness is required. The successful candidate is expected to teach a 2-2 course load, which includes but is not limited to a combination of the following undergraduate and graduate courses: Introduction to Strategic Communication, Crisis Communication, Research Methods, Public Relations/Advertising Campaigns, PR Writing, and Media/Account Planning. Successful applicants will also be prepared to teach digital media strategy/writing courses, applied theory and research, and courses with a focus on the changing landscape and innovation within the field of strategic communication. Engagement on capstone projects, masters theses, and doctoral committees (i.e., chairing, committee membership) is expected.

Development of relevant curricula for their courses, and collaboration with other faculty when areas of interest and course topical areas overlap, are also expected. A successful candidate will work to enhance efforts to continually offer courses that best prepare our students for the evolving communication industries.

Research:

Active research and/or creative work based on the candidate's program of research and interest are required. Extensive professional activities are also valued. Expertise in data analysis techniques for communication campaigns and research that encompasses digital/social media is strongly preferred. Priority will be given to candidates who can demonstrate research portfolio work and impact in the area of strategic communication.

Service:

Position duties also include mentoring undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in strategic communication, and assistance in recruiting efforts for PR/ADV student organizations. Additionally, service to the School of Communication, the College of Communication and Information when required, as well as to the University, the community, and to the profession is expected.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Communication or related discipline. Although a research portfolio is expected, strong consideration will be given to candidates who also have relevant professional experience, notably in strategic communication, crisis management, non-profit organization, and other PR/ADV-related professional activities.
