University of Southampton
Location
Southampton, United Kingdom
Salary
£31,406 to £32,344
Closing date
Oct 7, 2021
The Physical Oceanography Research Group in the School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is looking to recruit a Research Fellow with interest in how the ocean and climate system is changing, to join a major new project, 'Consequences of Arctic Warming for European Climate and Extreme Weather (ArctiCONNECT)'. ArctiCONNECT brings together experts in climate dynamics, polar and subpolar oceanography, and extreme weather, in order to transform understanding of the effects of accelerating Arctic warming on European climate and weather.

You will be responsible for tracing oceanic pathways from the Arctic to the North Atlantic, analysing both numerical models and observations with a variety of novel diagnostics. Working in close collaboration with researchers at the National Oceanography Centre, our goal is to establish how the changing Arctic influences North Atlantic sea surface temperatures, of consequence for the mid-latitude atmosphere.

To be successful, you will have, or will be close to completing, a PhD, or demonstrate equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a scientific/numerate discipline eg Mathematical, Physical, Environmental or Computing Science, ideally in the area of oceanography or climate science, with extensive experience in the analysis of observations and models.

This position is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 31/10/2023.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
