Site Name: USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: Sep 1 2021 GlaxoSmithKline is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company that combines a talented workforce and technical resources to create a platform for the delivery of strong growth in a rapidly changing healthcare market. Our mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. We are seeking a highly motivated scientific leader with an established track record in biochemistry and protein engineering to join our multidisciplinary research team in the department of Protein, Cellular, and Structural Sciences (PCSS) within the Medicine Design division of R&D, at GSK's facility in Upper Providence, Pennsylvania. The primary responsibility of the department is to design, generate and validate biological reagents for discovery activities across all of GSK's therapeutic modalities. The department also provides mechanistic understanding of drug targets through structural molecular recognition and mode of action to deliver the best molecule to therapeutic project teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expertise, setting strategy and driving delivery of protein reagents to enable early drug discovery across multiple therapy areas. Medicine Design has prioritized the use of selected discovery platforms as key strategic enablers and this role requires leading some of these key areas. The individual will lead drug discovery programs, mentor junior scientists and publish findings in peer reviewed journals. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to the professional development of others, assist in setting and communicating departmental objectives, while embracing and promoting GSK values. Title and salary will be commensurate with experience. Critical Responsibilities Work closely with the other Medicine Design lines to ensure optimal resourcing and progression of GSK's Early Discovery Portfolio using novel and creative strategies to reach important project milestones including target validation, commit to target, commit to lead optimization and candidate selection. Demonstrate strong leadership and scientific direction by supporting, motivating, mentoring, and developing a team of 6-8 lab-based scientists. Directly lead multidisciplinary early discovery project teams. Show task-oriented leadership in drug discovery by generating novel reagents to drive delivery of Research Unit and Medicine Design objectives. Continue to grow GSK's research capability in protein sciences to enable delivery of differentiated starting points that builds off GSK's investments in genetics, the immune system, and AI/ML. Enhance the reputation and external visibility of PCSS and Medicine Design via publication in high impact peer reviewed journals and external presentations at relevant scientific meetings. Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, work practice training and standards. Why you? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: A Ph.D. in a life sciences or engineering discipline with 6 years relevant experience, or M.S. with 10 years relevant experience. Experience generating and delivering protein reagents for early drug discovery platforms including high throughput and affinity based screening, structural biology, biophysics and MOA studies. Experience managing direct reports. Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: Delivering high quality results, overcoming challenges, and executing on key objectives.
