Science, Pharmaceutical, Clinical Research Associate

This bench-focused position is in the Research and Development group under the direction of a senior lab member. The successful candidate will support all R&D functions pertaining to the launch of a molecular assay into a clinical laboratory from assay development and regulatory submission to implementation and troubleshooting. This position will also involve working collaboratively on multi-disciplinary teams and with other technical and clinical groups throughout Labcorp on a variety of research areas as they apply to molecular testing.


  • Provide technical support on design, development and validation of complex molecular diagnostic assays with specific emphasis on next-generation sequencing assays
  • Work with other groups such as bioinformatics to develop tools or pipelines for data analysis
  • Analyze, summarize and present results within and outside of the R&D group
  • Draft reports for supervisory review
  • Train clinical personnel (technologists, supervisors, directors, QC) on assays and provide troubleshooting support, which may include additional experimentation and/or data re-analysis
  • Evaluate commercial products for applicability in a clinical lab setting
  • Generate manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals
  • Keep abreast of current literature pertinent to the project or departmental areas of interest
  • Discuss papers in a round-table forum among scientists with various backgrounds
  • Support routine lab activities, e.g. maintaining lab equipment, ordering/receiving supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics or related field with a minimum of 5 years relevant wet lab experience or Masters of Science degree in a related field with a minimum of 2 years relevant wet lab experience
  • Strong hands-on skills in molecular biology techniques, e.g. DNA/RNA extractions and quantification, PCR, qPCR, MLPA, Sanger sequencing
  • Hands-on experience in next-generation sequencing methodologies and working knowledge of NGS data handling and analysis tools; familiarity with basic statistics
  • Proficient with webtools and databases for assay design, data analysis, literature searches
  • Strong documentation, organization and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work under minimal to moderate supervision in a dynamic, collaborative environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clinical assay development in oncology, reproductive genetics or infectious disease
  • Liquid handling automation and/or coding experience
