Assistant Professor of African-American Studies

Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

We welcome candidates from any relevant discipline who have a demonstrated research commitment to Black health studies, whether exploring the histories of medical racism, persistent health disparities, or looking at sites of resistance to health inequities. Among the fields we seek to productively engage are Black/African American/Africana Studies, American Studies, and Ethnic Studies. Scholars actively engaged in current debates in these fields are of particular interest. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in Comparative Ethnic Studies and Black/African American Studies as well as graduate courses in our American Studies and Culture PhD Program. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and teach courses in her/his/their field(s) of expertise. As a tenure-track faculty member, the selected candidate will teach two courses each semester, conduct a substantial program of research and scholarship, and engage in service to the institution and the profession.

Campus and Program Description

WSU is a land grant, multi-campus, state university. This position will serve on the Pullman campus, located in rural Eastern Washington on the traditional homelands of the Palus Band of Indians and the ceded lands of the Nez Perce Tribe. The successful candidate will join The School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. SLCR was formed when faculty in Comparative Ethnic Studies and Foreign Languages and Cultures came together to create a unit dedicated to the study of language and cultural production, as well as social justice and social transformation. Faculty in the School of Languages, Cultures, and Race come from both humanities and social science backgrounds. We are seeking qualified candidates who can make contributions to the diversity and excellence of the School and the university community through their teaching, research, and/or service.

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Black Studies, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field at the time of the appointment.
• A clear scholarly research program/agenda.
• Evidence of successful classroom and individual teaching in Ethnic Studies and/or American Studies.
• Evidence of ability to mentor students, including those from diverse backgrounds. This can be discussed/shown in the Teaching Statement.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Evidence of developing interdisciplinary relationships and programs.
• Evidence of commitment to retention and student-success initiatives.
