General Summary

The Director, Research Administration ("Director") is primarily responsible for directing the operational, financial, regulatory and human resource activities of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Office of Research Administration ("ORA"). These activities will include analyzing, modifying, and developing improved structure as needed. The Director is responsible for all grant administrative duties associated with scientific and clinical research studies at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Principal Responsibilities

The Director, Research Administration will:


  1. In partnership with the Vice President, Chief of Research Operations ("CRO"), develop the evolving "roadmap" that will successfully advance the vision of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Research over the next five to ten years;


  1. Represent Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Research within Shirley Ryan AbilityLab operations forums and with leadership visibility for this important role with accountability for operational excellence in research, contributing as a member of a larger operating team within Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and committed to the long-term overall success of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab's mission;
  2. Provide oversight, direction and leadership for grant maintenance, renewal, and new grant acquisition successes through pre-award and post-award grant process improvement;
  3. Ensure adherence to and compliance with applicable state, Federal and other government regulations, accreditation requirements, and expectations of other regulatory agencies and funding sources;
  4. Oversee the development, implementation and maintenance of research administration Standard Operating Procedures as needed;
  5. Act as liaison between Shirley Ryan AbilityLab investigators and officials and others, when necessary;


  1. In partnership with the CRO, prepare and monitor annual Shirley Ryan AbilityLab budget including projections of sources of revenue and expense for grant, gift, contract and internal funds;
  2. Accountable for oversight and monitoring of grant budgets to ensure grant spending stays within awarded amounts;
  3. In partnership with CRO, implement and monitor approved Shirley Ryan AbilityLab research operations budget, to ensure achievement of budgetary success on an annual basis;
  4. Responsible for grant-related finances supporting Shirley Ryan AbilityLab research, including the preparation of research grant budgets and monitoring of gift, grant, and contract financial activities;
  5. In collaboration with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Finance, responsible for overseeing the operational payment structure, monitoring payments and billing as outlined in project contracts for all funded studies;
  6. As appropriate, collaborate with Northwestern University and other campus partners' administrative staff to develop strategies for maximizing research revenue and effectiveness;


  1. Responsible for the supervision and management of administrative and support staff within the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab research department including pre-award, department, and personnel;
  2. Creates an environment of engagement; solicits input from a wide variety of people and functions; proven ability to develop individuals and build a successful team;
  3. Oversee and direct all recruitment activities for research administrative positions, working in close liaison with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Human Resources staff and others;
  4. Develop and supervise a comprehensive program of ORA staff development including orientation, in services, continuing education, and staff meetings;


  1. Perform other duties as assigned by the CRO and/or SVP, Chief Scientific Officer.
  2. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to the Vice President, Chief of Research Operations. The Director will work closely with Research leaders to develop strategic initiatives and position Shirley Ryan AbilityLab research with the infrastructure and systems to achieve operational excellence.
