The Registered Nurse (R.N.) is responsible for coordinating individualized patient care, across their life span, based on the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating and documentation the effects of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient team personnel to maintain standards of professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the RN are carried out according to the New Jersey Professional Nurse Law, New Jersey Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
  • Formulates a collaborative plan of care to include review, evaluation, and as appropriate, revisions, for each patient on a daily basis. Expected patient outcomes are to be identified.
  • Implements, evaluates, and documents patient care interventions and effectiveness in accordance with care plan.
  • Assumes responsibility for and completes routine and complex assignments.
  • Demonstrates initiative and is able to function independently as well as interdependently.
  • Organizes, coordinates, and prioritizes patient care consistently utilizing available resources and according to hospital policies.
  • Recognizes the need for and initiates collaboration/communication with physicians, interdisciplinary team members, and takes actions to proactively resolve patient needs.
  • Demonstrates the ability to initiate, accept and adapt to changes in unit situations and alteration of assignments designated by Manager or designee.
  • Participates in identifying unit needs and supports unit goals and objectives.
  • Creates an environment of caring, welcoming, and nurturing for new employees and participates in the orientation of new staff as assigned.
  • Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to co-workers and students utilizing the PCRAFT initiative.
  • Takes and active role in unit-based government, committees, and process improvement initiatives.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Standing for up to 8 hours per day in 4 hour increments while wearing up to 10 lbs. of lead protective equipment. Sitting up to 2 hours per day in 20 minute increments. Walking for up to 8 hours per day in 10 minute increments. Continuous use of fingers and hands including frequent twisting and turning, fingering and handling, and occasional firm grasping. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Frequent use of upper extremities. Consistently lift, push, and carry objects up to 10lbs. Frequently lift, carry and push objects up to 75lbs with assistance when appropriate. Consistently pull up to 10lbs. Frequently pull up to 250lbs with assistance when appropriate. Transport patients weighing up to 400 lbs. via wheelchair, bed, and/or stretcher with assistance when appropriate. Utilizes body mechanics and assistive devices and/or support personnel to move patients. Occasional working with arms above shoulder and head level and occasional lifting up to 10 lbs. above head. Rarely lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Frequently stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing or crouching. Occasional crawling. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation in high and low frequency. Must be able to see as it relates to general vision, near and far vision, color and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and visual monotony (e.g., computer screen). Aural acuity to detect changes in patient's conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of New Jersey. Bachelors Degree in Nursing preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Two years medical/surgical experience with one year of GI/endoscopy experience preferred.

Evidence of successful completion of Basic Life Support. Evidence of successful completion of Advanced Life Support. Basic Computer skills preferred. Individualized orientation program provided.
