The Plant Senior Scientist works under the direct supervision of the Plant Site Director. The position is a part of the site's Leadership Team and involved in decision-making for all aspects of the site's operation.

The position is responsible for the execution of new product and formulation trials at the site, which delivers key product launches for the commercial team. The decision-making process of this position is critical to the ongoing growth of the site. The financial impact can vary based on product launch volumes but can generate $1MM+ in incremental sales.

The position will be a key contributor to achieving site cost improvement goals that exceed $2MM annually.

Major Responsibilities:

In the role of Senior Scientist, it is part of the site's success by being accountable for new product and formulation trials at the site. This entails effective project planning, coordination with divisional R&D resources, and trial ownership. The position will also be an on-site connection for Product Development (PD) to support plant trials, clinical batch manufacturing, and FLTS readiness.

The position will also focus on providing on-site scientific lead and formulation support to

nutritional product manufacturing activities in the Sturgis plant. This would include troubleshooting manufacturing issues and establishing root causes. The role would be expected to be the primary consultant to the site director on the scientific aspects of product concerns. This will allow for effective collaboration on operational issues, including batch corrections, etc. to alleviate potential product destructs.

The position requires extensive powder manufacturing knowledge. The Sturgis site includes 3 processing systems, spray powder drying, dry blending, and powder/liquid filling capabilities. Due to the broad capabilities of the site, this position needs to possess in-depth knowledge of the systems and will be utilized to diagnose root causes of production issues at Sturgis as well as at other Nutrition manufacturing sites globally that have similar processes.

The position will assist with improvements in formulation design and plant processes, to consistently deliver products that meet specifications.

Participation in projects and activities intended to reduce costs and improve product margins, as well as meeting quality and cost improvement goals related to the plant operations.

Will serve as the primary communications channel for technical/formulation issues between

the plant and the Technical Development Center/Division R&D

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Food Science/Nutrition, Engineering, or related scientific field. Master's Degree Preferred.

Background:

This position would require a minimum of 8 years progressive experience sufficient to demonstrate the key qualifications for the role.

Qualifications:
  • Requires thorough knowledge of manufacturing aspects of liquid and powder forms of Adult and Pediatric products, as well as their related nutritional, physical, and sensory characteristics
  • Intimate knowledge of the Sturgis plant's liquid and powder processing and filling lines, as well as operational idea generations (improved process, improved gross margin) and technical input into the Design-To-Value process
  • Effective indirect leadership and decision-making skills. Ability to influence key decisions via science-based data.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills are required for a productive exchange of technical information between Site leadership, Manufacturing, R&D, and QA.


Preferred:
Green Belt / Black Belt certification
