Laboratory Section Chief, College of Veterinary MedicineFull-time, Non-exempt, Market range 10The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for a Laboratory Section Chief located in the Virology Lab of the Department of Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences. This position exists to independently perform all tests required by the clinical-specialty virology laboratory including complex and highly technical procedures. Position is also responsible for the supervision of laboratory staff, production of clinical data, quality assurance, and other administrative functions.*Typical Responsibilities:*Oversees virology laboratory staff, production of clinical data, quality assurance, and other administrative functions. Provides day-to-day work direction to employees and reviews progress. Hires, trains, provides feedback, evaluates performance, and initiates corrective action. Reviews and approves standard operating procedures. Performs administrative duties such as inventory control, billing, and generation of statistical data. Provides periodic cost analyses and evaluates new equipment for purchase. Implements laboratory policies and procedures to include chemical hygiene, biosafety procedures, Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines or Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) procedures.Provides technical support in virology by independently performing routine procedures on clinical specimens in the course of diagnostic testing or clinical research. Establishes the presence and identification of disease-causing agents or conditions. Performs procedures for viral isolation and identification including but not limited to microscopic, ELISA, fluorescent, serological and molecular diagnostic techniques and all procedures to support these functions (e.g. maintenance of cell cultures, preparation of antigen slides). Reports data to clinicians and senior veterinary students. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures. Documents and troubleshoots problems with procedures and equipment with emphasis on laboratory quality assurance. Trains laboratory technologists, student employees and emergency students. Assists with the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures. Consults with clinicians and veterinary students regarding sample collection and interpretation of test results. Participates in relevant scientific continuing education programs. Assists with research study design and budget considerations. May assist with teaching veterinary students. Participates in relevant scientific professional societies and supervisory or laboratory management training courses.

Qualifications
*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:*Knowledge of biology, microbiology, and/or medical technology. Ability to establish and identify laboratory findings. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to perform testing procedures on various clinical specimens. Ability to adhere to safety procedures. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Excellent computer skills. Ability to perform quality control and quality assurance. Ability to train others. Ability to develop and implement procedures. Ability to supervise staff.*Minimum Qualifications:*Bachelor's Degree in biology, microbiology, medical technology, or related field and five-six years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting or equivalent educational experience. Supervisory or laboratory management training or experience required.*Preferred Qualifications:*Relevant post-graduate degrees or coursework desirable.
