Associate Dean of Students for Campus Life Job Number Full/Part Time Schedule Salary 23478515 Full Time 8AM - 5PM Commensurate with Experience Position Information The Associate Dean of Campus Life is responsible for the Highlander Union Building operations, program and scheduling functions, Associated Students Programming Board, Residential Life, New Student Programs, Fraternity & Sorority Involvement, Veterans Services, Student Organizations and Highlander Band, and Leadership and Service Programs. This role will take a critical lead in the strategic planning process for Campus Life departments to ensure alignment with the overall Student Affairs division strategic plan. The Associate Dean is responsible for the management and oversight of training and development, staff recruitment and selection, student success initiatives which includes academic programming, leadership development, community development, counseling, budget and administrative responsibilities, development of short and long range plans, lease management, contract administration, grant-writing, public relations, the implementation of comprehensive and culturally diverse campus wide programming including performing arts programs, and coordinating with other programs within Student Affairs. The Associate Dean of Campus Life must be comfortable and skillful at working through conflict with direct reports as well as colleagues across the institution. This position provides leadership and accountability for the administration, development, assessment, and improvement of student services and experiences which meet the University and the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs organization missions and strategic plans. This position will lead anti-hazing initiatives to ensure that there is a proactive educational framework for students as well as collaborate with the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Programs to ensure communication to students regarding rights and responsibilities. Work with the AVC/ Dean of Students and the Associate Dean of the Ethnic & Gender Centers to provide critical support of student safety during protests as well as engaging students in educational activities focused on free speech. The Associate Dean provides strategic direction and is focused on student development and service. The incumbent will work in collaboration with the Associate Dean of the Ethnic & Gender Centers to create synergy across the Ethnic & Gender Centers and Campus Life by co-programming and training of professional staff. Provide critical support of student safety during protests as well as engaging students in educational activities focused on free speech. Be highly visible and represent the division of student affairs on a variety of campus wide committees and work in collaboration with the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion to ensure that the programs within the Campus Life area are connected to institutional wide initiatives. The successful candidate must be well versed and comfortable engaging in issues of equity and social justice. This role will work side by side with the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students as well as the Associate Dean of the Ethnic & Gender Centers to plan and implement professional staff retreats, professional development opportunities and larger scale events. This position will be the point of contact and will respond to emergencies and needs for the AVC/Dean of Students cluster when the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students is away from campus. Makes recommendations to the Dean of Students on policies and processes regarding Campus Life. This position will also support all initiatives associated with AVC/Dean of Students and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. The successful candidate must be comfortable with evolving responsibilities and portfolio. Minimum Requirements Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership, and intercultural competence.
Thorough knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization.
Strong skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Advance knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
Strong skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Deep understanding of student development and best practices in student affairs.
Ability to navigate the university environment gracefully and in collaboration with a variety of constituencies.
Ability to provide crisis intervention and refer as appropriate, using discretion and confidentiality.
Strong strategic planning, budgeting and financial skills demonstrated by successful experience in directing resources toward accomplishment of strategic objectives as well as a successful track record of analysis, program evaluation, budget review and risk management.
Ability to navigate complex personnel issues and mediate workplace conflicts and address performance challenges in a fair consistent and neutral manner. Work and supervise a wide array of personalities with competing interests and navigate confidentiality successfully.
Strong assessment skills and experience utilizing data on an on going basis to develop and adjust practice and programming in alignment with emerging best practices and student needs.
Knowledge of the transfer experience in higher education and best practices in campus life and more specifically Orientation to address the needs of this student population.
Strong facilitation skills to assist and craft professional development sessions for professional staff as well as lead student discussions.
Ability to create synergy between student conduct and student organizations to ensure visibility of conduct polices and expectations through a proactive rather than reactive approach.
Deep knowledge of Anti Hazing initiatives to ensure a proactive approach to combat hazing at the campus level as well as work with colleagues within the University of California System.
Comfortable meeting with student groups to assess needs and emerging campus climate issues and strong strategic planning skills to lead strategic planning efforts for the division, DoS cluster and university level.
Ability to provide training and direction for staff within the area of responsibility focused on equity, budget, managerial skills as well as conflict management.
Preferred Qualifications Ability to work with minimal supervision and seek counsel from the Dean of Students when appropriate.
