The Associate Dean for Communication Strategy is the primary architect of the strategies and activities that convey this distinctiveness to external and internal audiences. With a deep appreciation for and understanding of the distinctive teaching, learning, scholarship, and research that makes up the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, the Associate Dean connects themes, ensures cross-departmental and intra-faculty communication, and manages a team of staff and vendor communication professionals to advance the reputation of Penn Law in the U.S. and abroad.

*Key Responsibilities:*

*Strategy Setting *

* Collaborating with the Dean, faculty, and senior leaders, develop and implement long- and short-term institutional positioning goals and explicit strategies to achieve them.

* Develop and implement Penn Law's institutional annual integrated communications, marketing, and public relations plans.

* Provide advice and identify opportunities for external experts to assist in managing messaging across a host of critical institutional issues, departments, and programs.

*Collaboration and Knowledge Building*

* Develop a keen knowledge of the depth and breadth of intellectual life at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, with an eye to maximizing internal and external knowledge of these achievements.

* Establish relationships with academic scholars and teachers; read and translate their work to identify and implement opportunities for broad dissemination and meaningful impact.

* Support Law School departments with strategic consultation on communications and marketing efforts; collaboratively identify staffing solutions to achieve departmental goals that support and augment overall communications strategies.

* Ensure a strategic and adaptable approach to coordination of large-scale projects while successfully championing an integrated approach to message and design.

*Positioning and Marketing *

* Ensure an innovative and effective public relations strategy, with generation and placement of news and media positionings about the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School; the scholarship of its faculty; the work of its Dean, faculty, students, and leaders; and the deep array of Law School programs, projects, events, and publications.

* Support departmental and other institutional marketing goals, especially as related to attracting top talent to the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.

* Collaborating with the Comms team, departments and staff, and faculty colleagues, ensure a vibrant web and social media presence.

*Managerial *

* Inspire and lead the professional development of the highly-productive internal Communications staff.

* Directly manage the Director of Communications. Oversee the development and contributions of a staff of five FTEs plus a host of part-time employees; ensure excellent management of all staff by modeling clear and replicable management and professional development.

* Identify and manage relationships with external vendors whose services achieve and amplify the strategic goals of the Communications team.

* Develop and implement the Communications operating and HR budgets (~$850,000 in FY21).

* Oversee the stewardship of departmental resources.

*Institutional *

* Represent the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School to a host of internal and external constituencies, including to media authorities, academics, government officials, and others.

* In collaboration with the Dean and faculty, ensure appropriate response to media requests on a wide host of issues.

* Provide strategic reports to University colleagues, the faculty, the Law School's Board of Advisors, and other audiences as requested.

* Serve in a central role in Penn Law's strategic planning, as a member of the Directors' Group and individually, contributing innovative ideas to the Dean and to colleagues on ways to achieve Penn Law's ambitious goals and how Communications will support those goals.

Other Duties as Assigned

*Qualifications:*

Advanced degree preferred; J.D. valuable but not required. Minimum of seven years of increasing responsibility in a role that involves strategic communications, public relations, and/or marketing; experience in higher education preferred. Portfolio of creative, innovative, exciting work, demonstrating the ability to communicate a distinctive brand to a highly educated and sophisticated audience, as well as a demonstrated and successful use of a variety of communications strategies that translate well to publicizing Penn Law's strengths in the most competitive arena of legal education.

Proven ability to digest and promote legal and related academic scholarship in the broader intellectual landscape. Demonstrate an understanding of multiple audiences in a cutting-edge setting, as well as experience representing a sophisticated organization in a variety of public and internal settings. Write and edit, or demonstrate ability to identify excellence in writing and editing, across a variety of styles for sophisticated audiences. Show an understanding of multiple audiences and their needs and demonstrate experience representing a sophisticated organization well in a variety of public and internal forums.

Experience managing and inspiring a productive and creative team, as well as experience identifying and overseeing external experts. Budgeting and planning prowess required.

Given the Law School's interdisciplinary and collegial environment, we seek a leader with an established track record as collaborator in the workplace, within the immediate department and within the larger institution, who can foster cross-departmental endeavors to advance the goals of the Law School.
