Boulder Scientific Company (BSC) is headquartered in Mead, CO, and is a premier provider of organometallic compounds and other specialty chemicals used in a wide range of applications. BSC is a pioneer and leading manufacturer of metallocene catalysts and co-catalysts that are primarily used to produce metallocene polyethylene, polypropylene and elastomers, but also supplies products into Electronics, Pharmaceutical and Defense applications. BSC operates two sites in Northern Colorado, which include: a main production facility in Mead and a second facility in Longmont. We are seeking an experienced Process Design Engineer to design process and equipment, automate processes, and execute on projects for batch manufacturing specialty chemicals and related products. This person will work on projects to improve current manufacturing processes as well as design for the growth of the company.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering and technical assistance as needed to support Production, R&D, Business Development and Pilot Plant
  • Provides technical input and calculations for regulatory and safety compliance
  • Provides technical input for process improvement and development as well as facility improvement and maintenance
  • Defines and oversees the execution of projects from initial scope to completion including the following:
  • Procures materials
  • Specifies and designs process systems such as vessels, piping and instrumentation
  • Develops PFDs, P&IDs and General Arrangement Drawings
  • Develops and maintains documentation
  • Interfaces with Project Managers and/or contractors, vendors and maintenance to ensure installation and completion of projects
  • Applies automation, such as programmable logic controllers (PLC), in the design of the processes.
Contributes to startup and commissioning activities and develops standard operating proceduresObtains knowledge of applicable environmental and safety regulations and best management practicesAttains a considerable understanding of BSC manufacturing and products, equipment and facilitiesTroubleshoots processes and systems for continual improvementAssists plant personnel in the development and execution of corrective measures to processing issuesDevelops and implements ideas for reducing manufacturing costs, increasing manufacturing capacity, improving product quality to maintain or to increase profitability in operationsDemonstrates an on-going commitment to continuous learning and improvementProvides training to operators on new or existing equipment and processesMay supervise operators, contractors, and maintenance employees as they relate to engineering projects.

QualificationsMinimum Bachelor's degree (prefer BS Chemical Engineering) and 5 to 8 years engineering experience with batch and/or continuous operations in specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or related field is preferred.

Experience
  • Must have exceptional mechanical reasoning skills, and be reasonably familiar with the following processes: filtration, distillation, and batch reaction.
  • Demonstrated competency in the following areas: fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, principles of distillation, process control, organic and inorganic chemistry, mass transfer, materials of construction, equipment specification, Process Safety Management, and ASME/API code requirements.
  • Experience in P&ID development using AUTOCAD is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of PLC based process control is preferred.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Registration is highly encouraged
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to Colorado weather conditions and manufacturing plant environment. Will be in manufacturing and lab environments that require the appropriate use of PPE.

Employee may be required to work hours other than their usual schedule; may be required to be on-call or available at odd hours and weekends to support manufacturing startups and continuously-running processes.
