The role

We are seeking a software developer to join us to help build a major genetic data research platform. Genetic associations provide a lens for understanding complex traits and diseases. The OpenGWAS project ( https://gwas.mrcieu.ac.uk/ ) aims to i) collect and harmonise results from genome-wide association studies; ii) make these publicly accessible via web services and downloads; iii) connect these data sources to a range of statistical tools in R and python; and iv) automate systematic analysis across the surface of data and tools as the resource grows. The database currently comprises over 180 billion genetic associations, is growing rapidly and serves thousands of users.

You will lead the development and maintenance of R packages that connect a range of genetic summary data sources with analytical tools, and which are widely used for enabling rapid and reproducible analyses at large scales. This work will occur alongside the development of tools for Python users, and require collaboration in building common data models.

What will you be doing?

You will develop and maintain R packages that connect a range of genetic summary data sources with analytical tools, to be used by researchers within the genetic epidemiology community.

You should apply if
  • You have a strong background in software development and have an interest in applying your skills towards genetic and epidemiological research.
  • You have Evidence of working with databases and/or web services and an understanding of different database technologies
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas to different audiences
  • You can deliver high quality presentations in meetings and at conferences

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
