Annual research expenditures were just under $200 million in FY2020. The National Science Foundation's latest Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey (2018) ranks Georgia State 114th out of 646 universities in the U.S. for research expenditures, 78th out of 408 public universities, and 1st among universities without a medical school or school of engineering.Position description summary:The Assistant Director for Research Development is a new position at Georgia State University. Reporting to the Assistant VP for Research Operations & Strategic Initiatives, this position will work closely with the AVP to build a new Research Development team that encompasses some existing programs and new programs and resources to meet growing needs of our research community. The focus of the new office will be on mapping Georgia State's research strengths to external federal and foundation opportunities, including assisting faculty and teams of faculty in the preparation and submission of complex grant proposals to federal and non-federal sponsors. This includes working directly with faculty and researchers to strengthen proposal submissions. This includes developing and maintaining resources to support researchers, and improving the quality of proposals being submitted. This position will assist with identifying funding opportunities, managing internal grant programs, managing limited submissions, building teams, and ensuring proposals are consistent with funder needs and requirements. This position will also help develop resources and tools, and will provide assistance to promote a collaborative research culture. In providing high-quality services to researchers, the assistant director for research development will serve in a key office that acts as a catalyst for advancing GSU's research vision.Therefore, this position has strong potential for growth as the office and its resources impact the growth of research within the institution and as demand for RD services increase. Key Functions and Expected Performance:
* Advise leadership, faculty, and key research centers in the identification and prioritization of funding and partnership opportunities; remain abreast of university-wide priorities and interdisciplinary programs that may be pertinent to sponsors; and maintain knowledge of sponsor directions, long-term strategies, new programs, public events, and program officers.
* Provide consulting services on strategic proposal development, including high-level conceptualization to match sponsor priorities; effective team organization; and credible administrative, management, education/outreach, and/or data sharing plans to assist investigators in the complex process of developing competitive proposals.
* Support proposal development for strategic teams of faculty and academic leadership that cross departmental and disciplinary lines to pursue funding opportunities.
* Assist with the management of the internal grant programs under the Office of the Vice President for Research & Economic Development.
* Provide oversight for management of limited submissions process.
* Co-lead campus-wide and targeted grantsmanship trainings for potential principal investigators and coordination of other webinars, workshops, and informational sessions for faculty aimed at providing provide critical guidance in support of growing research and enhancing grant award success.
* Assist with development and evaluation of all research development programs and resources and with decisions for strategic changes to what is provided to the research community at Georgia State.
* Establish relationships with early career faculty as they start their academic career and provide a calendar of funding opportunities to help them navigate time-sensitive grants and awards.
* Undertake other projects, as assigned.
Supervisory Relationships:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Assistant Vice president for Research Operations & Strategic Initiatives

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.
