Job ID: 4759AThe Quantum Sensing and Timing (QST) group at SDL focuses its efforts on building inertial measurement devices, atomic clocks, and other photonics-based quantum sensors. Laboratory activities involve laser cooling of atomic gases, optical tweezers, frequency combs, optical communication, and frequency metrology.

At the Space Dynamics Laboratory, we take pride in and highly value our employees. We are seeking a Senior Scientist/Engineer who is interested in a combination of basic research and application-focused projects. Our interdisciplinary group is experiencing growth, and we are seeking a scientist whose skill set both overlaps and complements that of the group. We encourage anyone who thinks working on a laser/photonics/quantum sensing team would be fun and challenging to apply.

SDL Offers Competitive Salaries And Fantastic Benefits, Including
  • A 14.2% employer retirement contribution into a 401(a) accountno matching required!
  • Generous paid leisure and sick leave
  • High-quality, low-cost health, dental, and life insurance
  • A great team that works together to solve some of the most fascinating problems on (and off) our planet
  • Relocation assistance available for most positions
Currently, we are seeking to increase our bench depth in support of application-motivated research efforts associated with photonics and micro-optics. This position is first to understand the mission (Position, Navigation, and Timing applications), and then to imagine what sort of photonic/atomic device could address the mission, work with the team to design the overall sensor concept (utilizing appropriate modeling platforms), and ultimately build the sensor.

As a research-based team, its important to have team members with a relentless curiosity for how things work and the ability to get things done regardless of obstacles that will inevitably occur. Detailed knowledge of photonics is not a pre-requisite/requirement for this position, though it is a strong plus; substantial on-the-job learning is expected.

This position is in support of Air Force Research Laboratory, Space Vehicles Directorate, and as such requires the ability to acquire and maintain and DoD security clearance. The work location will be onsite at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM.

Please provide a resume/CV and a cover letter detailing what caught your attention about this job posting and what technical contributions you might bring to the team.

Required Qualifications
  • A Ph.D in physics, optical or photonic engineering, or a related field
  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance
  • At least three years of laboratory experimental research experience
  • Demonstrated high-level work in the field of physics, photonics, or optics
Let us know in your application materials if you possess the following qualifications:
  • Knowledge of photonics
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and adapt to new projects and technical areas
  • The ability to present challenging scientific topics clearly and the ability to create well-written papers and technical reports with little or no oversight
  • Able to work in diverse teams
  • Highly creative and curious in a laboratory environment
