Responsibilities*DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC*: The Claflin University Department of Music is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Its degree requirements are in accordance with the latest published regulations of that association. The department is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As a degree-granting department, we offer two major programs of study: BA in Music Education and BA in Music and will launch a jazz studies concentration in the fall 2021 .
*RESPONSIBILITIES:* The successful candidate will serve as Director of Choral Studies, teach undergraduate conducting, conduct choral ensembles, coordinate/oversee the voice chamber ensembles and mentor and coach student conducted ensembles as needed. The successful candidate scholarly and creative activity should make a contribution to a body of knowledge within the discipline of choral music/conducting and reflect a high standard of quality. They must demonstrate and maintain an active professional career and research profile as a leader in their area of expertise. They must develop a strategic plan for the choral studies program, conduct or supervise most vocal ensembles, advise students, teaching choral methods and choral administration courses, supervise student teachers, and teach other undergraduate courses in music education depending on the Department of Music needs. Additional teaching responsibilities may include other courses within the candidate's areas of expertise. The Director of Choral Studies (DCS) oversees the budget for all choral ensemble scholarships as well as the choral studies inventory. The DCS is expected to maintain a positive profile among South Carolina choral directors to actively recruit vocal students within the state. The DCS must work closely with studio teachers to recruit and maintain suitable numbers for each voice types in the department. The DCS must maintain an active presence with the SC NAfME and the South Carolina American Choral Directors Association. In addition, the DCS is expected to participate fully in departmental and community performance obligations consistent with all ensemble conducting appointments. The candidate is expected to participate fully in departmental activities such as recruitment, advising and mentoring, and to fulfill University requirements of committee service, grantsmanship, and expected to be significantly active in creative and/or research activities consistent with all faculty appointments. The DCS is also expected to promote the Department within the state, nationally and internationally.
QualificationsPhD or equivalent training and professional experience that equates to an advanced degree in Choral Conducting; DMA and ABD will be considered. Additionally, a valid teaching certification in Music Education with a minimum of 3 years of successful teaching within K-12 schools is required. The successful candidate will have: 1) a demonstrated record of excellence of teaching in higher education; 2) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and music; 3) a strong knowledge and command of current technology with skills to teach in multiple learning modalities.
