Who is the Wessex Institute?

The Wessex Institute is a large enterprise unit within the Faculty of Medicine (University of Southampton), and is focused on providing high quality, practice-based research evidence to support decision makers in health and social care. Our capabilities are broad, ranging from public/patient involvement in research, priority setting, research funding, managing the delivery of research, publishing and disseminating research findings. The Wessex Institute is home to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), and is responsible for managing around £150m of new research funding each year, with an active portfolio of around £1bn. Funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, NETSCC manages six national and international research funding programmes on behalf of the NIHR. The NETSCC contract is the largest enterprise contract held by the University of Southampton and is administered by the Wessex Institute. NETSCC was established in April 2008, and consists of a team of managers, academics, clinicians, researchers, and support staff managed by the NETSCC Board. We manage the identifying, prioritising, funding, delivery, publication and dissemination of high-quality research and lead other National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) initiatives to meet the needs of the public, patients and the NHS.

About the role

This is an exciting time to be joining an organisation making a real difference to peoples' lives through our national and international research.

We are looking for Assistant Research Managers to fill three staff vacancies, within NETSCC, across our key health research management teams supporting national research programmes. Depending on the skills of the successful candidates, and available roles, we will allocate to the most appropriate teams within the organisation.

As an Assistant Research Manager, you will work closely with colleagues to support the research management pathway, including responsibility for key areas of work and assisting the efficient delivery of a pipeline of activities and projects both delivering and liaising with others from commissioning, funding, contract management to the publication of findings.

You will need to build and maintain positive and professional working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders; therefore, teamwork and the ability to communicate effectively are essential. You will be capable of prioritising your own workload, have an adaptable and flexible approach to work, and enjoy using your initiative to adapt and refine working practices.

You will have demonstrable work experience in an administrative environment, with strong attention to detail and good communication skills, be well-organised with the ability to multi-task and to work well as part of a team. You will have task management experience and an interest in supporting the development of health research funding in the UK.

You will actively work to achieve goals and take initiative within the workplace. You will have meticulous attention to detail, with analytical skills to be able to interpret specialised data to create reports, highlight issues, and prioritise work to resolve issues.

You will be joining enthusiastic and cohesive teams that are committed to adding maximum value to the management of health research funding.

The posts are based in Southampton, although occasional travel to other locations across the UK may be required and will be fully reimbursed.
