Grant-Funded Researcher (A) - Planning & Scheduling

(Level A) $89,610 per annum plus an employer contribution of up to 17% superannuation may apply.

Fixed-term, full-time opportunity available for two years.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on an ARC-funded Linkage project, in collaboration with the industrial partner Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia.

The ideal Postdoctoral Fellow candidate will have an outstanding background in Computer Science or Applied Mathematics (or equivalent), with particularly experience in the development and implementation of numerical methods, and engineering applications of optimisation techniques in real-time control of dynamical systems. Additionally, the candidate will have experience with the mathematical foundations of automated planning and scheduling algorithms.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to research in planning, sensing and scheduling for naval assets combining optimization-based approaches with methods from artificial intelligence-based learning. The results will be applied to demonstrate coordinated autonomous sensing of naval assets in dynamic maritime environments, with an aim to deliver a high quality maritime situational awareness solution.

To be successful you will need:

• PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or a closely related field (preferred expertise in planning and scheduling).
• Strong background in planning and scheduling algorithms, constraint satisfaction, and operations research.
• Fundamental knowledge or research experience in optimization methods, ideally in combination with constraints and uncertainty. Experience with distributed constrained optimization problems (DCOP) and disjunctive temporal networks with uncertainty (DTNU) will be helpful.
• Research experience in combining optimization methods with machine learning.
• A high level of analytical and problem-solving skills, as demonstrated through the ability to perform independent research and deliver high quality research outcomes in a timely manner.
