Senior Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry

Calitihera is seeking a talented and highly motivated chemist with pharmaceutical industry experience to join our chemistry team. As a Senior Scientist, the successful candidate will contribute to all phases of the drug discovery, including HTS, hit identification, hit to lead, lead optimization, and candidate nomination. As a member of a dynamic multiple disciplinary team, the candidate will collaborate with a broad group of scientists within Calithera and external groups to identify new molecular entities to transform patients' lives.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Design novel bioactive chemical entities in alignment with project goals based on the SAR analysis and by applying medicinal principles and tools.
• Plan and execute the synthesis, purification, and characterization of complex small molecules.
• Employ sound judgment in the evaluation and strategic decision making on HTS hits and subsequent hit optimization follow-up.
• Advance drug discovery programs by collaboratively interacting with other cross-functions to understand and optimize DMPK and in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties.
• Effectively manage and mentor junior medicinal chemistry colleagues and external CRO chemists through strong synthetic and medicinal chemistry skills.
• As needed, contribute to chemistry program strategy or serve as chemistry project lead for drug discovery programs.
• Work closely with biologists to evaluate new programs and provide input on chemical tractability and analysis of literature leads.
• Present results of work, interprets data, and draws conclusions regarding presented material and nature of work.
• Contribute effectively to patent reports, and scientific publication writing.

Requirements:

• Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry with 5-8 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in small molecule drug discovery and development.
• Excellent understanding of medicinal chemistry concepts and execute strategies across all stages of drug discovery process to achieve program goals.
• Proven track record in medicinal chemistry as evidenced by successful advancement of drug discovery projects is desirable.
• Good understanding of structure-based drug design concepts is desirable.
• Exceptional understanding of physicochemical, ADME, biochemical, pharmacology principles and effectively applying these in the design of novel small molecule drugs and toward successful project advancement.
• Demonstrate a high level of creativity and productivity with strong synthetic problem-solving skills. Have clear command of organic synthesis and conversant with the current literature.
• Experience in mentoring and managing both internal junior chemists and external chemistry resources.
• Collaborate and communicate across a dynamic multi-disciplinary scientific team to successfully progress scientific goals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills including ability to present the rationale, data, issues and accomplishments of the team.
