PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community and provides dedicated support to NCI's intramural Center for Cancer Research (CCR). The dedicated units provide expertise in electron microscopy, protein characterization, mass spectrometry, protein expression, optical microscopy, and genomics. These research efforts are an integral part of CCR at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), where CRTP scientists work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

TheCCR Sequencing Facility (SF) has been established by CCR to manage theoperation of multiple platforms for next-generation and third-generationsequencing in support of NCI investigators. This is a unique matrixorganization that pulls in capabilities from the Advanced BiomedicalComputational Center (ABCC), Quality Management, and the CRTP GenomicsLaboratory.

The successful candidate will be expected to

* Work with SF director, group leaders, technical, quality management and informatics staff to develop, implement and perform laboratory processes in support of the SF operations
* Coordinate with SF, quality management and informatics staff to implement high throughput sample preparation processes into workflows
* Coordinate with SF, quality management and informatics personnel to implement updates to equipment, chemistry, and processes. Identify, research, optimize and implement new processes or technologies that serve to improve data quality or efficiency of production pipeline
* Remain current with new applications and technologies associated with NGS sample preparation, library construction, sample enrichment and target capture

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

* Possession of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or eight (8) years of related experience. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
* No experience required beyond PhD
* The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in molecular biology or genetics/genomics, isolation and manipulation of DNA and RNA, PCR, gel electrophoresis, high throughput platforms, applications and technology, be familiar with usage of a LIMS, practiced independent design and performance of experiments, capable of trouble shooting assay or production problems, and able to develop/optimize new assays or production methods under the direction of a lab supervisor or scientist
* The individual must be able to work closely with a team in a high paced environment with a high attention to detail, strong time management, organizational, and communication skills
* Proficiency with MS Office suite, experience using statistics and analysis software tool would be a plus
* Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

* Genomics-based laboratory experience
* Experience with Illumina (Solexa), Roche (454), or sequencer operation and maintenance are highly desired
* Experience with next gen sequencing development, troubleshooting, analysis, and laboratory automation with the ability to work independently or in a team, adapt to changing task priorities, and quickly learn new techniques and be able to train other personnel in those techniques with proficiency is preferred
* Experience with Single Cell platform such as 10X Genomic, Mission Bio
* Experience with Cell Culture
* Work in a core/service facility
