Reed College seeks an outgoing and dedicated postdoctoral research associate for a position in Biochemistry/bioinorganic chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Kelly Chacón. This research position focuses on working to characterize a novel set of proteins that may bind chalcogens.

This is a full-time, exempt, 1-year position with opportunity for renewal. The position typically works 37.5 hours per week, but hours may vary. The starting salary for this position is $54,756 per year. Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package, including comprehensive medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution (after one year of service), educational assistance for employees and their children, 22 days of paid vacation, paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer, and many other campus amenities.

The postdoctoral researcher will further develop ways to express and characterize these novel proteins and enzymes using protein biochemistry and spectroscopy. Experience working with uncharacterized proteins is strongly preferred, as well as interest in learning spectroscopic techniques such as EXAFS, fluorescence, and electronic absorption. The position also requires strong communication skills, since this work involves collaboration and supervision of undergraduate research projects. Applicants with a desire to mentor undergraduates, work independently, pursue external funding, and become an active member of the Reed community are preferred. Dr. Chacón leads a competitive and well-funded research program. Located in Portland, Oregon, Reed College is one of the country's leading liberal arts colleges, offering a rigorous academic program to approximately 1,400 undergraduates.

Who You Are
  • You have experience working with uncharacterized proteins.
  • You have an interest in learning spectroscopic techniques such as EXAFS, fluorescence, and electronic absorption.
  • You are an excellent communicator.
  • You have a desire to mentor undergraduates.
  • You enjoy working independently.
  • You have some experience pursuing external funding (scholarships, awards, grants).
  • You have a desire to become an active member of the Reed community.
  • You hold a Ph.D. in biochemistry, or in chemistry with an emphasis in biological chemistry.

What You'll Do
  • Develop ways to express and characterize novel proteins and enzymes using protein biochemistry and spectroscopy. Applicants need not be expert spectroscopists to apply - Dr. Chacón is an expert in this realm and will train you!
  • Collaborate on and supervise undergraduate research projects.
  • Be actively supported and mentored toward your next career step(s) by Dr. Chacón.
  • Help create an inclusive and equitable environment in the laboratory.
