Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer and Head of Division (Head of Clinical Department): Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

In partnership with the Western Cape Government, Department of Health , we are seeking an incumbent who will provide vision and leadership that will enhance our position as a leading Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government, Department of Health , on the conditions of service of the University.

Reporting through the Executive Head : Surgical Sciences, to the Chief Executive Officer Tygerberg Hospital, and the Dean: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences , the incumbent's duties will include:

  • Overall strategic leadership and operational management of the Division, giving expression to its vision of becoming a world-class centre for training, teaching and learning,

clinical service, research and innovation in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery;
  • Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork;
  • Operational management of human resources and the finances of the Division;
  • Participating in clinical service delivery commitments of the Division, including commuted overtime at Tygerberg Hospital;
  • Overall academic responsibility for teaching and learning, which includes supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork;

Operational management of human resources and the finances of the Division;

Participating in clinical service delivery commitments of the Division, including commuted overtime at Tygerberg Hospital;

Overall academic responsibility for teaching and learning, which includes supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

across the Faculty's distributed training platform;
  • Overall responsibility for research and innovation, which includes leading, mentoring and participating in the design, execution, supervision, publication and translation of

  • Actively participating in the internationalisation efforts of the University;
  • Contributing to the goals and functioning of the University and the Health Department through active involvement in the relevant management structures of the University

  • A postgraduate qualification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which may include a relevant MMed degree and/or FC Plastic Surgery (SA);
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery;
  • A proven record of Plastic and Reconstructive surgical competence as evidenced by the submission of a personal surgical logbook of the past three years;
  • Teaching, clinical training and examining experience in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Experience in conducting research and postgraduate supervision;
  • Proven national and international recognition as a specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

A postgraduate qualification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which may include a relevant MMed degree and/or FC Plastic Surgery (SA);
