*L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality & Tourism Management (The Payne School)*

The L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts is an academic unit encompassing four degree programs: undergraduate degrees in Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) and in Recreation and Tourism Management (RTM), and master degrees in Hospitality and Tourism Management and Meeting and Event Management. Between the two undergraduate programs there are seven emphases. HTM has Hotel Management, Meeting and Event Management, Restaurant Management, and Tribal Gaming. RTM has Outdoor Resources, Recreation Systems, and Sustainable Tourism. The Payne School also hosts a minor in Recreation and Tourism Management. The combined enrollment in these programs is approximately 400 matriculated students. The School has 20 faculty and 8 staff.

The Payne School is one of just two named schools at SDSU and has established itself as a true innovator and pioneer in global hospitality service leadership, recreation administration, and sustainable tourism education. The Payne School emphasizes excellence in research, teaching, and service. *Position Description:*

The L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is seeking a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor for a Fall 2022 appointment. The position requires a passionate teacher-scholar that will design and teach classes in hospitality, recreation, and tourism experience marketing at the undergraduate level. While the research agenda is open, candidates with expertise in design thinking, experiential marketing, human centric data analysis, marketing research using quantitative methods are required.

Furthermore, we are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. Please indicate in a separate diversity statement how you meet at least two (2) of these criteria.

Ideal candidates must embrace a leadership development mindset, are energized by engaging students in integrative learning and high-impact experiences, demonstrate enthusiasm for a research agenda aligned with the experience economy context, and a genuine desire to get involved on and off-campus.

We expect the newly appointed faculty to design and teach new undergraduate classes in experience marketing that include novel and meaningful learning activities, inside and outside the classroom. Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate an ability to create these innovative, high impact, experiential learning activities, and contribute above and beyond the classroom. Initial teaching assignments will be in the existing core undergraduate classes such as HTM 201/RTM101 Introduction to Hospitality, Recreation, Tourism Management and RTM 290 Quantitative and Qualitative Literacy in Tourism, and HTM 219 Hospitality, Recreation, and Tourism Professions. These core courses involve increasingly complex experiential learning projects, aligned with program level learning outcomes.

The position will also have responsibility for consistent productivity in scholarly research, and high quality peer-reviewed publications are required for promotion. The pursuit of personal passions is embedded in our School culture, and the faculty, staff, and students build strong community and industry partnerships. This position is well suited for a faculty member with genuine interest in mentoring students, and engaging with community and industry partners as part of the university service requirement. Practical professional experience is highly desired in an area of meeting and event, recreation, leisure, and tourism programming and marketing.

Earned doctoral degree in hospitality management, recreation management, tourism management, business administration: marketing, or relevant fields. Candidates who are able to illustrate an ability and drive toward student mentoring and leader development, particularly with underrepresented communities, are strongly desired.
