ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR POSITION IN DIABETES & HEALTH DISPARITIES RESEARCH
The Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders at the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is seeking a researcher with a focus on health disparities for an appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor. A strong track record in community-oriented or outcomes research with a focus on health disparities in the field of diabetes, obesity, and cardiometabolic disorders is required. The successful candidate will receive an attractive startup package and consideration will be given to award an endowed chair position in diabetes research.
The candidate will collaborate with clinical researchers at the Strelitz Diabetes Center, within the Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to lead a program of independent research that is competitive for extramural funding. The responsibilities will include but are not limited to;
- Conduct health disparities & implementation research in the areas of diabetes, obesity, and cardiometabolic disorders;
- Perform and promote broad-scale utilization of program research results;
- Help build the capacity for health disparity/implementation research through mentorship and training;
- Collaborate with researchers and epidemiologists in programs such as the EVMS-Sentara HADSI, The Brock Institute, Pediatrics Division of Community Health and Engagement to conduct high-quality health disparity and/or implementation science outcome research;
- Work closely with faculty at EVMS to conceptualize, design, and implement research studies that generate evidence for programmatic decision making;
- Identify strategic partnerships and collaborators for research studies, and utilize the evidence to inform the scale-up of programs;
- Increase scholarship within EVMS through publications in peer-reviewed journals, securing extramural grant funding, and contributing to the research profile of EVMS.
In addition to the continued growth of his/her research program and scholarship, the successful candidate will collaborate with faculty in the department and across the medical school, and contribute to the EVMS presence in the Hampton Roads region. The selected candidate will have opportunities to be part of new initiatives in community engagement as designed by the medical school. Opportunities also exist to collaborate with translational and basic researchers conducting biomarker discovery.
Qualifications
An advanced degree in the areas of public health, social or medical sciences is required In addition, at least five years of experience in health disparity and/or implementation science outcome research is needed. The candidate should also demonstrate significant experience and a track record of successful funding. Applicants with promising or demonstrated capacity to build productive interdisciplinary research teams, mentor trainees, and earn external funding are particularly competitive.

The position is aligned with the EVMS 2020 Strategic Plan for Advancing Health Equity and Inclusion for Community and Academic Impact, which has as a key objective the promotion of research addressing causes and prevention of health disparities in the Hampton Roads region.
The Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders runs the Strelitz Diabetes Center as well as general endocrine clinics. It has an ACGME accredited Endocrinology fellowship program. In addition, it maintains an ADA-recognized diabetes program. It collaborates with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, our primary teaching hospital, and has developed an innovative inpatient Cardiovascular Diabetes Program. In addition, the division has years of experience working and collaborating with the underserved communities of Norfolk as well as the Western Tidewater area of Virginia. Currently, the division is launching a 4-year community-based internally funded diabetes research program in the Western Tidewater area. The division has well-developed clinical research manpower and infrastructure. The Sentara Diabetes Program and Heart Program have both been highly ranked nationally by the US News & World for many years.
The Norfolk/Virginia Beach area is a highly sought-after area for comfortable living and raising a family.
