Job Summary
The Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah has an immediate opening for a Postdoc Research Associate. Primary duties consist of research-related work in a research laboratory.

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at 419 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108 if they are healthy and without COVID-19 symptoms.
Essential Functions
1. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.
2. Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment. These will include, but are not necessarily limited to:
a. Biochemical analyses of enzymatic activities and levels of specific metabolites in cells, tissues and organs harvested from euthanized laboratory animals.
b. Molecular analyses of cells, tissues and organs harvested from euthanized laboratory animals
c. Behavioral testing of laboratory animals.
3. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.
4. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
5. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
6. May supervise the care of research animals; perform minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis. These will include, but are not limited to, management of mouse colonies, genotyping of animals, as well as intravenous injection of approved therapeutics and blood draws.
7. May oversee the operations of student course experiments in a laboratory setting.

Problem Solving
This position assists senior laboratory personnel in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and basic theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position may include limited supervision of entry-level laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. If incumbent cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor.

Work is performed in accordance with the supervision of senior laboratory personnel and through periodic conferences with superior.
Minimum Qualifications
A PhD degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or other related scientific discipline or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification will be required.
